I read through this blog and found some of it troubling. They were talking about fat blockers and carb blockers. That doesn't teach you to eat properly. That's right up there with purging. They also were talking about some sort of noodles being no starch. Sorry, but that is impossible. The language they are using is either misinformed or just plain wrong in many cases. It looks suspiciously like an advert for Herbal Magic.
As far a LA Weightloss goes, some people have complained about the supplements, bars and shakes. I personally know someone who was on the program and did not use any of those products. She has celiac disease and has to be very careful about what she eats. They were able to accomodate her with adjustments to the plan.
With any of these programs, I think you will find some inconsistency from one consultant to the next. Some consultants are very good and very knowledgable, some less so.
I would definitely stay away from any program which requires you to use prepackaged food. This does not teach you anything about portion control or how to cook in a healthier fashion. It is extremely expensive and ties you to the company indefinitely. If you stop buying their food and start eating regular meals, chances are the weight will come back.
You have to learn to eat real food and learn what is the appropriate amount for your body.
Life is a banquet and most poor suckers are starving to death.

I am torn to comment on feedback i have been given from past, present and current clients as a personal trainer.
But i guess there are pro's and cons to everything and if it helps someone reach their goals, that is a positive.

Personally, I think WW is the most sensible option for people who need a little help, cost wise and health wise. It teaches you how to control portions, plan meals and really think about what you are putting in your mouth. They do offer bars and WW food, but it isn't pushed on you or required by the program. You can eat anything you normally would but have to account for the food value. Obviously if you normally eat high calorie low fibre foods you will have to make some changes but if you are eating healthy foods while on the program you shouldn't have any problem keeping your tummy full.

A good friend of mine uses LA Weight Loss and has pretty good success with it. She's lost about 60 pounds so far and finds it a program easy to follow. They talk a lot about portion size (which was a big part of her problem) and they check in and have you do weigh ins, which can help to keep a person motivated.
For me, I just do the basic old calorie counting. And exercise.

Personally i think to some degree it's great if something works for somebody, on the other hand common sense has to enter into the equation at a certain point. And in my opinion the media has overloaded people with information and to much misinformation on the subject of weight loss. In theory it is basic concept if you consume to many claories than your body is burning off you gain weight, and if you consume less calories than your body needs you lose weight. But also you lose very imprortant muscle mass and tone, and hence fall into the pattern of yo-yo dieting.
And one big thing that places like WW and herbal magic don't seem to have alot of expertise in is exercise recomendations for people.

The best "diet" in the world ...
1. Instead of a dinner plate, use a lunch plate
2. Instead of a soup bowl, use a fruit nappy
3. Increase your fiber
4. Eat brekkie
5. Eat supper at lunch
6. Snack on fruits and veggies between meals - have 5 meals a day instead of 3
7. Don't deny yourself any food - especially your favourites. If they are unhealthy choices, eat them less often and sparingly. Denying something creates a craving.
8. Buy your "treats" in single serving packages. Have your buttered popcorn in a small bowl.
9. Eat your greens at every meal - brekkie is excused
10. Limit your salt
11. Chew your food extra well.
12. Take smaller bites.
13. Slow down, enjoy your meal.
14. Push yourself away from the table
15. Tell yourself "I will", not "I can't".

"hasbeenathlete" is right, if you're not taking in enough calories (from the right foods) during the day, your body will go into starvation mode, and you'll hold your weight, or gain. I was going to the gym 4 days a week, and couldn't figure out why I wasn't losing anything. Turns out I was only eating about 700 cals per day. I bumped it up to 1200 and lost 5 pounds in one week.
LA weight loss seems so freakin stupid to me...sorry, JMHO! My MIL was on it, and they count your weight loss by ounces? That's just bad! She was pretty much told that she could eat whatever she wanted in the book she got (or eat anything that came out of that store-$500 on snacks!) and drink pineapple juice. The woman got excited when she lost 4 ounces! Just a thought, what if she hadn't peed before she left? Would they have counted that as a gain? lol... Eat right, exercise, and don't be so damn lazy that you're looking for the next quick fix!

I know three people who have been on LA and did remarkably well on it.
They were not forced to buy product and learned how to eat properly.
They also benefitted from the regular couselling.
Did your MIL actually do the program? They tailor it according to the client's needs. If they are weighing you 3 times a week, measuring the loss in ounces is not unreasonable.
As for 1200 calories a day, that is still the bare minimum for most adult women. Hasbeen's comment of "eat 1200 calories" is probably bad advice for anyone who is larger and wants to lose weight. A 1200 calorie diet would still be considered "starvation".

No, she was not forced to buy the product, but was told she'd do remarkably better if she did. And yes, she actually did the program. I also know of one other lady that did the program, and did well for about 5 months. She then crashed because she didn't change her lifestyle, just changed what she ate, and the food she was eating was unreasonable and not likely to fit into your daily routine.

Obviously, "hasbeen", my Dr has taken grade 12 bio and then some... So 1200 cals a day is not hurting me. I will keep up with that until she advises me otherwise.
