Vasectomy in Kelowna

Post by Rick73 »

Wondering if anyone could answer a couple questions for me.

Is it possible to get one without a dr referral? If so, where?
Is it covered by insurance? I have read different things about this.

Thanks a lot for any help.
Edit: Maybe help from someone who has had one and can recommend a urologist. Maybe someone has had a good or bad experience from a certain dr.

If you go through your Dr, it's covered by MSP. Not sure about private options.

I know a few people who have done this. Go see your GP. It will be done at the hospital on an outpatient basis with local anaesthetic. Regarding time off afterward: Take the Dr's recommendation and add a day.

The Dr. didn't feel a thing. I suggest standing chest deep in a cold lake the day after.

A few years after my snip I was at my GP and he apologized for telling me that it didn't hurt. He had recently had the procedure himself. :smt045 [icon_lol2.gif]

Yeah, those Dr's lie.
IF he had told you the truth and it was going to hurt.......would you still have the procedure?

Everyone has their own definition of pain. If a Dr. told you that a heart attack wouldn't hurt, would you try to avoid one?
Likewise, child birth. Any woman that has had one, would give good reason to not do it again.... :135:

Having a vasectomy has far fewer possible issues (plus it's reversible) then having the female equivalent.

Unfortunately most men feel they are far to macho to have the procedure.

Most people call it a va-sectomy. But it's really a vas-ectomy.

My GP did it in his office. It was in Burnaby about 25 years ago now.

He did lots, always on Fridays.

Very simple. Local anesthetic, he located each vas tube feeling them through the testicular sack. Made a very small incision and stuck an instrument in through the small hole and pulled a short length of the vas through the hole. So you now have the round instrument with the vas looped out through the hole. He cut a short section out, tying the upper end and leaving the lower end open. Then let the segmented vas return. Did the same on each side, no stiches in the sack (the hole was about 1/4" long.

I got a running commentary and I watched the procedure, it was interesting.

Took about 45 minutes.

Then told to go home pack with ice and remain. Take it easy the rest of the weekend. Very little pain, by Monday good to go.

The only real pain was the following morning. Along with the ice pack I decided that being a Friday evening, stuck watching TV in bed, I should have some caesars a couple tasted good, so naturally a bunch more would taste even better.

A co-worker had his done and against doctor's orders played baseball that evening. He became a "land owner" (two achers). Recovery took several days after that for him.

I don't know what luck you'd have trying to see a urologist without a GP referral.

Get it done by a specialist. Take their advice on what to do after. Take Ativan beforehand. Do not get it done by a GP.

Four pieces of advice to live by. The scare stories are real. But, when it goes smoothly, you will be sooooo happy you did it the right way.

I had mine done in a hospital.

I said to the anesthesiologist, "local please".

It wasn't even 2 minutes into it, when I started to squirm and prop myself up to see what was going on.

2 seconds later, I woke up in recovery, given a cup of water and told to go home.

It hurt (a little) for the 1st two days, but I just think it was an anesthesia hangover.
By day 3 I was back at work.

My friend had it done and he just went down to the lake and waded in, waist high. and was back at work the next day.

Don't know if I'd want lake water soaking in near a couple of incision. Especially in that area.
