Cameras in city lots to deter break-ins?
https://www.castanet.net/news/Vernon/25 ... -city-lots
A fine idea. Just one problem. The thieves do not give a care if they have a full mug-shot caught on camera while committing the crimes because NOTHING happens to them anyways!
The cameras are not deterrents - what MIGHT be a deterrent is if the camera identified the person, they were arrested, they went to Court, and the Judge gave them a penalty of time behind bars OR going to rehab....their choice.

No, cameras have been proven to deter break-ins. It won't stop it completely, but it will drop the numbers.

Maybe another idea could be to bring back the Auxilliary cops.....they used to be doing the beat ....they'd be great in addition to cameras.
I'm a firm believer that visible police presence makes people think twice - but that only works if they know that getting caught by said police will carry a consequence. If they just tell them to move on, or arrest them and release them, or they get to Court only to be patted on the head by the Judge, then it's all for nought.

And give them nightsticks to administer instant justice. If they want private police, I suggest they hire the Sons of Odin. They'd clean up the mess and it would stay clean.
