Personal use of work phone may become tax headache

The use of a company-supplied smartphone, laptop or other electronic device is commonplace these days, and employers know full well that employees will use them both for work and personal purposes.

However, new guidelines from Canada Revenue Agency suggest employers may have to take a fresh look at how much of the cost of these devices can be attributed to their commercial activities.

Yeah, it's clearly a taxable benefit, just like a company car being used to run personal errands. Gotta pay for all of the social services we know and love. Get a good accountant.

While there's a potential for use of company-supplied phones to be considered a "personal taxable benefit," tax experts say that's not new and the tax rules give employers ways to minimize the impact on their employees.

My son was given a work phone, but he doesn't use it, preferring to use his own phone instead. His reasoning being that it's too hard to use two separate phones, and his employer monitors all calls made on theirs, including personal. So, in order to keep his personal calls private, he uses his personal phone for both business and personal calls when in town.

If the CRA begins to tax his work phone he'll probably just hand it back to his boss, because he rarely uses it.

On the other hand, prior to retirement my hubby did use his work phone for both business and the occasional personal call. But the majority of the calls were business, and he frequently used it to check his email while at home. If he had been taxed on it, he probably would have refused to bring a phone home with him, and the business would have lost out on all that free labour. Plus his boss would have had a much more difficult time getting hold of him after hours, or when he was on out of country trips.

The bottom line is that productivity will likely suffer if the CRA starts getting picky about taxing such a tiny benefit.

The socialists don't get it, but those who know how business relies on productivity sure do.

Canada has slumped in productivity compared to our competitors under Trudeau. His tax hikes and red tape have stifled entrepreneurship and made the working class fall behind. If all your extra dollars go to tax, why bother?

Time for a change, before we're so far behind that we'll never catch up.

I only have a work phone that I am expected to answer days, weekends, and evenings.....using it for my personal use i guess is a perk. The start taxing it, it will stay off on evenings, weekends and holidays.
