bob vernon wrote:The biggest loser: Alberta. Been losing ever since oil was discovered there. Did they put away anything for the inevitable bad times? Only $15 billion and then Ralph Klein got ahold of that and spent it all on lower and lower taxes. Now they're running deficits. And still electing the thieves who've given away their wealth. Of course the latest incarnation of those is Jason Kenney who claims it's "all Trudeau's fault".

Norway: been socking away about 70 percent of the money that their oil generates. They are now at about $1.2 TRILLION. That's 1,200 billion compared to Alberta's long gone 15. All Norwegian education, even university and technical schools, is free. All health care, even more than ours, is free. Your kids can play any sport they want with coaching. Free. It's just a socialist hell.

That was Peter Lougheed's plan for the Heritage fund. Put 30% of resource revenues into the fund each year, so there would be something when oil finally fell out of favour.

45 years on, Alberta would have been in the same enviable position as Norway.

Unfortunately, subsequent conservative premiers were not nearly as smart as Lougheed. In some cases, they were literally dumb as drunks. Klein raided the fund to hand out his Ralph Bucks.

At any rate, the fund hasn't seen an additional dime since '88. It's basically a pittance.

So we can add Alberta voters to our list of losers.

Not really. This is a really disingenuous statement.

I understand he was a pilot in the Canadian Air Force. Pilot-commissioned officer- degree of some sort.
He'll be collecting a military pension or will later in life.

Maybe he'll be flying you to Mexico as a West Jet pilot...
Unlike some politicians, he has something tangible to fall back on. Albas or Scheer or Trudeau for example, perhaps not so much.

Yes, Fuhr actually has lived and worked in the real world for most of his life.

Perhaps some of you are confusing him with Mr. Scheer, who has never held a real job, has been collecting government cheques since he was 24, and has spent most of the time since his election living rent-free in mansions with chauffeurs, maids and nannies provided by the taxpayers.

Though not for much longer, I guess.

Sic transit and the whole caboodle.

Fuhr's defeat

Perhaps if you didn't support a criminal loser, with ethical violations, you'd still have a job. You're a good individual, as far as I can tell, and have done good for the Okanagan. Supporting Trudeau was your mistake. We all make mistakes. Move on and hold your head up high.

That's absolutely true. Denying this could only be disingenuous partisanship. :smt045

Canadian citizens lost this election. The electorate was the biggest loser.

Canadian citizens voted in the election. This is their decision, not yours. This may be your opinion, but most Canadians wanted left wing leadership, and that is what they have.

Comparing a province of a country to an actual country, that receives many dollars per barrel for its oil because it's not landlocked, and because enviro-nuts aren't blocking every opportunity to change this, is just disingenuous partisanship at it's finest.

Did they really get "left wing leadership"? Seems more like corporatist Canada masquerading as "left wing leadership" whilst hiding behind empty gestures like "gender balanced cabinets" and taxes on fairy tales. If you truly are "left wing" then would you be happy with BlackFace JT as your leader? Really? I don't see it myself.

The only difference between Norway and Alberta is Norway decided to save a large portion of its oil revenues and Alberta decided to fritter it away.

Lougheed set up the Heritage Fund and dictated that 30% of resource revenues would be deposited each year.

Unfortunately, Lougheed was the last smart Conservative premier and when he stepped down, the fund stopped growing.

Subsequent premiers decided to use resource revenues to lower taxes and for ridiculous stunts like Ralph Bucks.

This is why Alberta's fund is worth a measly $17 billion and Norway's is worth 70 times as much.

Because Norway saved and Alberta is stupid.

Let me rephrase that. Most Canadians did not want right wing leadership. And they voted either for a left wing party, or a centrist party that was more likely to win and prevent right wing rule.

The only thing that is "stupid" are the stupid people trying to compare Norway to Alberta. The same dolts who are supporting the eco-lunatics blocking Alberta from getting their oil to tidewater.

So this is your theory for why the Conservatives received the highest percentage of the vote? To prevent the PPC from getting into power? This seems like a pretty silly theory, given the PPC wasn't much of a threat.
