Sophie Trudeau's charity gets $900 million from taxpayers

Post by Gone_Fishin »

Ottawa outsources student-grant program to a Toronto charity that works with Justin Trudeau’s wife

OTTAWA—The federal government is outsourcing the administration of its COVID-19 grant program for student volunteers to a Toronto-based global charity that works with the prime minister’s wife, and will pay the organization based on how many placements it fills before the end of October, a Liberal cabinet minister said Thursday.

Bardish Chagger, the Liberal minister for diversity, inclusion and youth, told the Star the government will monitor the program — estimated to cost more than $900 million — run by WE Charity to make sure it does not allow free student labour to replace paid work at not-for-profits over the next four months.

Chagger did not say how much WE Charity will get from the government to administer the program, but that the payment will depend on how many volunteers use the grants.

She also dismissed a question at an earlier press conference about whether Sophie Grégoire Trudeau’s involvement with WE is a conflict of interest, citing her confidence that government officials have “done all the checks and balances to ensure that everything will be successful.”

For Duff Conacher, co-founder of the advocacy group Democracy Watch, that amounts to the “appearance of a conflict of interest” for the Trudeau government under Canadian law — even if she doesn't get paid for her work with WE.

“You’re not allowed to further your own interests or those of your relatives or friends,” he said, citing the federal Conflict of Interest Act. “Her interests are aligned with the organization’s interest.”

Conacher also questioned why the government isn’t using its own bureaucrats to administer the program. “There’s no reason to involve a private organization and to make a private organization — that is not subject to any of the conflict of interest rules — the gatekeeper,” he said.

Wow, why am I not surprised...at all. Trudeau is the epitome of a rich elite piece of greddy garbage. What else can you say? Anyone who votes for him or this Liberal cult is a traitor to Canada.

No bidding process followed to award the $900,000,000 to Sophie and her groupies?

I'm so shocked. Must just be an oversight on Justin's part. I mean, you can miss a few details when you only have half an hour a day at work.

Since when has the mythical concept of "appearances of conflict" ever been considered by Trudeau? That is right up there with the secret meeting with Communist Chinese Bankers, followed closely by the establishment of Communist Chinese Banks, then a million-dollar "donation" to the Justin Trudeau Family Benefit Fund and the sudden appearance of a hideous statue of his male parent. A statue, by the way, that is one of the very few in Canada that should be torn down.

The topic title is totally misleading as the Charity is not getting 900 million it is administering the program that could hand out that much money.

The fact that Mrs Trudeau is affiliated with the Charity is the part that is not good and should definitely be looked at.

Half an hour of work, from home. Has he actually gone to work? [icon_lol2.gif]

Funny how this whole thing is ok with the Liberal sycophants. If it had been a Conservative's spouse it would be the lead story for weeks. The outrage would be deafening.
Why use a big word when a diminutive one will suffice.

Now I'm wondering where the $2+ million in hush money for the girl from West Point Grey came from. :135:

Update from the same source the OP used.
Dani Keenan, a spokesperson for Diversity, Inclusion and Youth Minister Bardish Chagger, later confirmed to the Star by email that the government will pay WE Charity $19.5 million to administer the program for 20,000 volunteer placements — a figure that will increase based on how many post-secondary students and recent graduates use the program.

“ While most of the $912-million will go to student volunteers, Mr. Trudeau declined to say Friday how much of that amount will go to WE Charity for administration costs. He also said it was the public service that concluded the charity is the only organization in Canada that has the scale and ability to deliver the program.”

<SNIP>

“ NDP ethics critic Charlie Angus expressed skepticism that the public service would recommend outsourcing administration of a federal program after recently demonstrating the ability to manage much larger emergency programs during the pandemic.

“It stinks of cronyism,” he said in an interview, adding that WE Day events have given the Trudeaus a positive platform over the years to address thousands of Canadians as they are about to become first-time voters.

“I find it extraordinary that Canada’s civil service would come to the Prime Minister and say, ‘Listen, we’re not equipped to deliver programs for the Canadian people. You should privatize it and give it to a group that’s very close to you,‘” he said. “I would love to see who gave that recommendation because it just boggles the imagination.”

Mr. Angus said he’s concerned that WE Charity’s work would presumably be exempt from federal Access to Information laws and that the organization will be gathering large volumes of personal information on participants.

Conservative MP Raquel Dancho, her party’s critic for diversity, inclusion and youth, said Mr. Trudeau’s explanation raises questions about his involvement in the decision.

“Given the Trudeau government’s history of ethical violations, the Liberals must immediately release the contract for this partnership,” she said in a statement. “Trudeau’s failure to provide answers about this contract raises more questions about how he was involved in this decision, why he doesn’t think his own government officials can administer the program, and how much it will cost Canadians to outsource this program.”
