Possible new park
This piece of land on the shore of Okanagan Lake between Ellison Park and Predator Ridge is for sale. Councillor Scott Anderson noticed that it was for sale and got the attention of council. In the distant past, most of the lakefront land in the Vernon area was allowed to fall into private hands and the city has suffered because of it. Look at Kelowna and especially Penticton and their fine beaches on the lake. Here is an opportunity to establish a fine park. The alternative is to allow it to be sold to the wealthy who will ban the public from accessing the lake. Get on it.

There is a petition already, I signed it.

Why didn't the government use their power of eminent domain years before?

I think it would be an awesome addition to Ellison Park!

The same reason it's never used for this purpose by any community/government in Canada.
Eminent domain is only to be used as last resort, only when there's no viable alternative, and only when it represents a "strong public need". Expanding a park rarely meets the above criteria.

Run for mayor and turn all private lakefront property into public parks, some might not like it but the rest of the city will keep you elected.

Allowing Public access to what nature has given us should always be a priority. I truly hope this Park becomes a reality.

What on earth makes you think that a mayor would be able to do this?

... 'interesting' idea. Lacking (of course) in all reason, logic, need, legality and sensibility... but sure is 'interesting'.
in the same spirit - wouldn't it be great if we took away ALL personal property ownership. Build large concrete towers - each citizen assigned one "living compartment" in giant apartment blocks. Then everything would be a park!

OK. So to clarify your position here: What you're saying is that all you need to be successful is a desire to do something? The laws, economics, city management structure, etc all don't matter - so long as you have desire you can get it done?

Eminent domain = expropriation? Get serious. Leave that to certain politicians who want to build walls.
Otherwise, it is sad to see some people ridicule the notion of habitat and other preservation. The property is for sale, it may be sold to (almost) anyone, if the public values it, great, let's buy it. Kelowna's jewel is Knox Mt. donated and preserved for 100+ years now and heavily used.
I'm willing to contribute to a fund. Is there one started? I live in Kelowna but we often hike the trails of Predator Ridge and Ellison; with the state the property appears to be in, it would be an invaluable addition to the public inventory.

When Vernon existing parks are gone to dogs what is the use of spending tax payers money and adding one more to this list as the parks are supposed to be kept clean so that all public can use it. Once it is bought and before a sign of park shows their will be a plastic dispenser for Dog poop & loots of poop on ground with some picked with residue on grass blades & not picked on ground.Just for example Marshall field,Kin beach etc

Who's talking about a city park. We're talking about an addition to a provincial park. That said, obviously there's no serious interest in a public fundraising campaign. Pity. The rail trail was important, this jewel is more important imho.
