Lived for four years in a house near San Diego, had strawberries every month except Dec, Neighbor had a navel tree that hung over the fence............. Jealous yet???

Getting tomatoes out of the green house, and thinking about how to grow greens indoors through the winter, just in case.

My wife wants me to thank the person on here that suggested I plant the bottom part of green onions. She's really impressed.
I planted about a dozen and they kept growing and growing and growing. Almost to three feet high.

She will often cut some of the green part off but on occasion pulls up the entire onion and will use it up over several days. They have an incredible strong flavour.

Three years ago a pal informed me of onion bulb planting, then two years ago I mentioned it here. I hope more will take advantage of this quick and foolproof method of gleaning onion stalks so soon after planting.

This year after planting bulbs I also planted two full packages of onion seeds. Wouldn't you know it, every darn one of them thrived so now up to neck in harvest.

What to do? Here's what I have tried, tested and found to be a great solution to using up all those green onions.

Pull up, tap off soil from roots. With scissors, cut off roots then trim the top of onion leaves to an even length.
Wash thoroughly to remove sand, soil. Drain

Cut onion leaves into 1/4 rounds, drop into zip bag and freeze. Add to soup or stews as needed, at the last minute for cooking.

The bulbs are just as good as asparagus. Remove sheaths from bulb, then cut off all but ine inch above bulb. Add at last one minute of cooking spuds, carrots, etc. Drain and add butter and salt. Absolutely delicious. Or chop and freeze, add to soup.

Leave some in the ground for fast onion in spring, just cut off tops.

I have picked 5 full beer flats of cherry tomatoes and might get one or 1 1/2 more flats off ONE plant !! I also have a pepper plant ( red) that lovingly gave me 10 beautiful peppers, my green one has only given me 6 peppers :)

squirrels.

I've been watching these cucumbers grow over the past week or two, getting bigger and juicier. A couple of days ago I went to pick them as they were hanging from my fence and this is what I found,

There was another just like this one.
At first I thought it was most likely a rat as we've had a bit of a problem with them in the neighbourhood. I showed the cuc to my neighbour and he immediately got out his rat trap.
The next day I'm working near the fence and a movement catches my eye.
It's a little brown squirrel, and then along comes another one just a few feet from me.

Yup, I'm certain these are the culprits, but what to do about them?
I did inform my neighbour and he removed the rat trap.

Something has been after the lower growing tomatoes. I have enough that I'm not really missing those ones, though it does bother me that some critter is invading my garden.

I picked another colander of blackberries today, and when my friend was over he wandered down the side yard and came back saying "your raspberries are starting on their second crop".

Rats love Tomatoes. They apparently like Peaches as well. I set a trap for my neighbor at the base of her Peach tree and got one that night.

The deer have taken nearly every ones product and fruit off the trees ( The one Buck loves peaches)
I have told everyone " do not leave me Squash" but you can all leave me a jard of home made dills ( I like the little ones) and canned crab apples. No jams or jellies TIA :/

Neighbor behind us has a rat issue (again) in her overgrown mess of a yard - not surprising especially with the multiple bird feeders she has. We suspect they ate our next-door neighbors tomatoes (boy was she *bleep*) but didn't touch ours, maybe because they're on the far side of our house of out of the little monsters' path of attack. When we confronted her (again) she gave us some loony story about how she contacted 'someone' and they said she couldn't do anything about them because they are pack rats

Anyway - hubby is making sauce this morning with our tomatoes.
