GM Partners With Nikola And Other EV Vehicles In The Works.

Post by cyruslosco66 »

GM strikes partnership with electric vehicle maker Nikola

General Motors announced its second major electric vehicle partnership in less than a week on Tuesday, this time a $2 billion deal with startup Nikola.

GM will take an 11 per cent ownership stake in the Phoenix company and will engineer and build Nikola's Badger hydrogen fuel cell and electric pickup truck. The Badger is expected to be in production by the end of 2022.

Kind of discussing that here

Nice to see the partnership announced. Hydrogen is the real future, not golf carts.

Really shot their stock price up after the announcement!

Anheuser-Busch placed an order for 800 of the hydrogen-electric Nikola semi trucks last year as the beer brewer looks to turn its entire long-haul vehicle fleet into a zero-emissions one. By 2025, the company has committed to shaving 25% of its carbon emissions.

I'm excited to see it.

I have a couple of contractor buddies who are really looking forward to it. Mostly because of the built in power supply. They really like the idea of a truck that you can plug your tools into. Makes sense when you think about it - to charge the thing you'll need to max out a 240V outlet for 6-8hrs. If it's a local job and you only use 25% of the battery getting to/from that'll still leave plenty of power to run your average tools for the day.

When I asked "why not the cyber truck" their response was "No way my tools, job box, etc will fit properly. Everything is designed/engineered with modern pickup bed in mind".

Better check with local dealers on chances of seeing any, since they are currently having trouble getting current models.

I prefer waiting for a hydrogen, EV take forever to charge.

Looks alright .

That's a 2020 body, it won't look like that, but it will be excitign to see what they come out with. There's been longstanding rumours they've teamed with Rivian on development - and the Rivian truck looks really nice.

I like the look of the Rivian much better than the Ford.

As for price just look at what a new fully loaded pickup costs. I'd think the Ford EV F-150 wouldn't be cheap either.

^^^Start saving your pennies or hope you win the lottery before the truck is launched according to InsideEVs web site.

Price
This is the biggest unknown. Surely a pickup truck is expensive and the electric version of the F-150 will be no exception to this rule. We expect a sub $100,000 starting price, but this is simply just a guess at this point in time. We don't expect the F-150 EV to come close to matching the $40,000 base price of the Tesla Cybertruck though.

I suspect the wait time for this truck is going to be very long.

Covid is causing long wait time for current models.

Added: just drive by the new home of Ford Lincoln to see the low inventory.

I'm wondering if it has something to do with aluminum shortage given how much of a Ford is aluminum? I've been told several times now by grocery store staff, that certain items are just not available now in cans due to said shortage, thus they can only be purchased in plastic bottles now.

I don't like pop in one litre bottles as it goes stale by the time I want to drink it. A can is just the right portion to have sitting in the fridge.

There are struggles to supply batteries, and rare metals such as cobalt. There is a massive battery shortage. 'Ramping up' EV production is just not possible. Battery shortages have been getting worse over the last few years. As Tesla trickles out EVs, they are consuming most of the worlds supply of the particular batteries used.

Added note
If you would prefer a fuel cell vehicle, FCs rely heavily on platinum as a catalyst. The worlds largest producer of platinum is Africa at about 100 tons per year and platinum is used for many other things than fuel cells. Phasing out combustion vehicles by 2030 to 2040 (depending on the country) is tantamount to saying 95% of the world population will never have a vehicle after 2030. This is one reason why better battery technology is needed. Fuel cells use 10x as much platinum as a catalytic converter also making them expensive.

On a bright note, the mineral gastankium is in abundance.
