BC Liberal party goes leftist

Post by bob vernon »

Promising daycare! This is the successor party of Bill Vanderzalm and before that Bill Bennett and before that WAC Bennett. The party of the right wing of the west. And now they're promising daycare to the electorate? That's SOCIALISM!!!

They should be telling the working folks to get their act together and look after their own darn kids. This is the party that is supposed to be giving tax cuts to the wealthy and BigCorporations and closing hospital wings, court houses, and schools. Leftist nonsense must be contagious.

Okay, so you're not in favour of schools, hospitals, transportation, parks, environmental protections, or the justice system.
These are all examples of socialism, where the government funds them for everyone's benefit.

Canada was built on the theory of "we all do better when we all do better" not "I'm out for me".
None of us gets to decide what is best for all of us, otherwise one person's special interest would be funded at the expense of everyone else's.

I'm in favour of schools, hospitals, transportation, parks, environmental protection and justice and I think individuals should be able to shop the free market and purchase the best they can afford.

It's good to know your history before you spout off about it. W.A.C. Bennett nationalized BC Hydro and BC Ferries and invested heavily in expanding BC Rail, because those things benefitted British Columbians under government ownership. I suspect if he were alive today he'd be down with the daycare idea.

History is fun. I've always liked this little blast from the past...
In the late 1960s, high public dissatisfaction with the state of automobile
insurance, particularly rising rates and poor service, led the Social
Credit government of W.A.C. Bennett to establish a royal commission,
chaired by Justice Robert Wootton of the Supreme Court of British
Columbia, to review the situation. The commission’s report, completed
in July 1968, concluded that there was no effective competition in prices
and that a significant number of uninsured drivers were on the road.
It recommended that the government take over the sole selling of auto
insurance if the industry failed to adopt his recommendations, such as
adopting a no-fault system of claim resolution.

There should be a spot on the ballots that is "None of the above (idiots)"

Or "This is the best you can do"

Doesn't matter which "party" you subscribe to, BC is going to have to do some work on all real caring aspects of our society. Daycare is just one of them.

Like all of these things, when it comes to voting, it gets tricky. In the last election Andrew Weaver put forward and excellent plans (plans, not just talking point promises) for Daycare in context with expanded early childhood education. He also put forward a really sound platform proposal for health care reform - which would also have improved options for seniors. Unfortunately, there always is a "poison pill" in party platforms - and in Weaver's case, the climate change plans he put forward were simply unworkable and would have exacerbated economic inequality problems and created poverty.

I am having the same issue with voting this go 'round as Norma. Every party on the ballot has "poison pill" policies for me. I will, of course, look closely at all the platforms, and make a decision in the end. Not voting is poor choice as no party will ever match my worldview 100%. It is a "cost/benefit" analysis. Accept "x" bad policy position to get "y,m and z" good policy position.
The middle path - everything in moderation, and everything in its time and order.
