And look at what just happened in Newfoundland. The Conservatives were headed for a massive win and after all the delays in counting and allowing weeks of mail-in ballots and advance polling.............. the Liberals somehow won. Obviously rigged.

Give us a break! This Liberal govt is constantly trying to use the minority government and a possible election to sneak things through parliament. Jagmeet salivates every time because it means he is going to get some treats thrown his way.Hobbyguy wrote:

If ever there was a time when amendments to the Canada Elections Act could be trusted to be free of "hanky panky" it is when you have a minority government - they MUST get members of other parties to go along.
As I hinted earlier I believe Trudeau is trying to set things up to his advantage and this is part of the plan. I might be wrong but there is still nothing wrong with properly debating a bill. Unless of course you want it through quickly so you can call a snap election. If Trudeau wanted it passed he should have been working harder as it has been around for a while. Suddenly it become important. When Trudeau acts like this there's an excellent chance something is up. We all know he can't be trusted. He has proven that beyond a doubt.
Consider how hard it is to change yourself and you'll understand what little chance you have of changing others.

"Us" ? Who are you speaking for ? It's been noted before that one thing that Liberals and Conservatives have in common is that they both think the majority of voters sit further to the right than they actually do.Smurf wrote:Give us a break!

The polls did favour the Conservatives going in, and the margin of victory for the Liberals was the slimmest in Newfoundland's history, but you'll need more than that if you want to make "obviously rigged" sound like anything more than sour grapes.bob vernon wrote:And look at what just happened in Newfoundland. Rational people who acknowledge the Trudeau Liberal track record instead of ignoring or downplaying it, I expect.fluffy wrote:"Us" ? Who are you speaking for ?Smurf wrote:Give us a break!

Good grief Charlie Brown. Jumping to conclusions that make no real sense.Smurf wrote:Give us a break! There is no "sneaking things through parliament". There are 4 opposition parties that clearly outnumber the Trudeau Liberals. Minority governments function on cooperation. The "debate" issue is charade thrown up the party that chooses to be trolls and nobody else. Face it, 99.999% of the time each party has already decided how they will vote BEFORE a bill hits the floor. The so called debate is little more than an extension the theater of the absurd the official opposition has turned question period into.
Amendments and/or changes to a bill are done at the committee stage and in the committees. That's where the parties negotiate and hash out objections before there is any "debate". The "debate" is simply a chance for parties/MPs to pontificate as any MP who has issues with a bill will have already hashed those out with the committee representative from their party. Of course there will always be lone wolf dissenters, but the chances of of lone wolf dissenter accomplishing anything are zero.
In a minority government the committees are not controlled by the governing party. There is no "sneaking something through".
The debate stage does have higher importance when there is a majority government, but no more effectiveness - in a minority government meh!
In context, there is little justification for demanding more "debate" pontification time. The bill needs to get through the senate and receive assent before the budget is tabled. There is nothing controversial in the amendments to the Canada Elections Act, they have already been hashed out at committee, this is just one of the opposition parties playing games as is their wont. The amendments would never have made it out of committee if they were not both reasonable and necessary and they are aimed strictly at the pandemic situation and the issues that arose in the NFLD election that need to be avoided.
The rest is distinctly "theater of the absurd" and bordering on conspiracy theories.
The middle path - everything in moderation, and everything in its time and order.

The entire Liberal party right now is "theater of the absurd". Just plain awful, untrustworthy arrogant jerks. They can stick it.hobbyguy wrote:

Of course there is . OPolitics. Strike while the iron is hot. The Conservatives have effectively been labeled as climate change deniers, and while remain so until something is done to undo that. The only cure at this point is to come with an effective plan for environmental responsibility and it looks like there is significant resistance from within the party. That lack of unity would be fatal in an election.rustled wrote:There is no reason to rush this Bill. None.
We also have to consider that the bill has been under study for months now, and no one has raised any legitimate concerns yet. As hobbyguy mentioned about the bill containsw reasonable measures to hold an election under pandemic conditions. If the Liberals were to call an election without these measures in place who do you think would be the first ones pounding their fists on the tables ? Is it "rushing the bill" to ask for some progress where there has been little so far ? I'll give you one guess who is holding up the works. The Conservatives aren't ready for an election and they know it. The "delay" card is the only one they have to play right now.
