I’ve been looking at satellite images (still images) of this volcano, looks very green in and around it. I suspect this has been dormant for some time.

Probably find the name in several countries/ states etc. I looked for a translation and got "sulphur mine".

Still seems odd the USGS mapping doesn't show anything close to St. Vincent, though!

Last eruption was in '79. Seems much greener than Mt. St Helens area, maybe because it's more tropical?

There were strong tremours reported, "the type that indicates that magma is close or near to the surface..."

So far it's ash plumes, but who knows with a volcano, you should see the jungle destruction in Guatemala right now. Unlike Iceland, where the basalt is overlaying other basalt filled with moss.

For those of you on Facebook, there is a UWI Seismic Research Center facebook page. It is publishing St. Vincent's volcano right now, all the citizen journalism it can get. Videos, photos, the works. Also includes some good informationals on volcanoes in general.

And GordonH, you are right, the types of tremours indicating an imminent blow up have a special name, begins with "h".

Harmonic tremours indicate to scientists when a volcano will be ready to explode. Which they monitered for, got and ordered an evacaution of the Island. And this baby isn't over yet, just getting started again. Thousands died in 1912, so why take chances now?

There doesn't appear to be much if any correlation between sun activity and volcano eruptions.

Newly discovered Greenland plume drives thermal activities in the Arctic.
Greenland has melting ice from a mantle plume and it helps drive thermal activity in the arctic. There is also an estimates of 75000 volcanoes in the oceans.

I’ve have checked with USGS, EMSC as well with French RéNaSS
None of the above have any seismic activity in or around St. Vincent Island.

yesterday a 4.1 magnitude earthquake has hit east of Saint Lucia from RéNaSS (which is some distance from St. Vincent)

"University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre (UWI-SRC) and National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) reported that the lava dome in Soufrière St. Vincent’s main crater continued to slowly grow during 31 March-6 April, expanding to the N and S. Gas-and-steam continued to rise from the top of the dome, as well as along the contact with the pre-existing 1979 dome. A swarm of volcano-tectonic (VT) earthquakes began at 0638 on 5 April. The number and frequency of the VTs increased until about 0830 and then stabilized. The rate declined at around 1400 and then significantly dropped at 1600, though small VT events continued to be detected through 1800. The events were located at depths of 6 km, slightly deeper than the swarm events recorded during 22-25 March, located at revised depths of 3-5 km. Several reports of felt events came from nearby communities, including Fancy and Chateaubelair. The largest event, a M 3.5, was recorded at 0920 and felt by local residents. The swarm was more intense than the previous one, with an average rate of about 50 earthquakes per hour compared with 1.5 per hour during 22-25 March. The Alert Level remained at Orange (the second highest level on a four-color scale)."

The sudden swarm of harmonic quakes triggered the scientists to issue an evacuation warning to the residents of St. Vincent.

There are thousands of drone footage videos of the Icelandic events, too many to list. Lots of Live Stream with international chat available on the side.

Guatamalans are inudated with their images of their jungle being burned to the ground by lava.

I find interesting that 3 organizations I mentioned which have sensors throughout Caribbean didn’t pick up any of seismic activity, in or around St. Vincent (crickets).

Did pick up a lot of activity between Dominican Republic & Puerto Rico.

Next concern is rainfall, because ash can turn into concrete.

I remember the days after Mount St. Helens, we were hundreds of kilometres away (600 Kms +/-).

La Soufriere Eruption Scientific Update
10/04/21 6pm
1. Following the gradual decline of near-continuous seismic tremor at La Soufrière, St Vincent, the seismic network started to record banded tremor from about 3:30 am onwards on 10 April.
2. Banded tremor is a seismic signal which indicates that fluid (magma and gas) are approaching the surface
3. Each tremor episode lasted 20 to 30 minutes, with gaps between them of one to three hours. The
episodes appeared to coincide with periods of enhanced venting or explosive activity.
4. The background level of seismic tremor between the episodes continued to decline.
5. Ash thickness from the past 24 hours of eruptive activity varied from <1mm in Colonaire (~12.5 km from the volcano) to 10-15mm in Rabacca (~7.4 km
from the volcano).
6. Ash thickness and grain size generally increased from Kingstown northwards to the volcano. Ashfall was reported in parts of Barbados and Saint Lucia.
7. The volcano has entered an explosive eruptive phase that may continue over the next few days and weeks. Explosions are expected to be of similar or larger magnitude.
