Profits up, dividends up, good news for investors, good news for Albertans, good news for Canadians!!
Imperial Oil Ltd. had a first-quarter profit of $392 million compared, with a loss of $188 million a year earlier, and has raised its dividend.

The company says it will pay a quarterly dividend of 27 cents per share, up from 22 cents.

The increased payment to shareholders came as Imperial says its profit amounted to 53 cents per diluted share for the quarter ended March 31 compared with a loss of 25 cents per share a year ago.

Revenue totalled nearly $7 billion for the quarter, up from $6.69 billion in the first three months of 2020.

Imperial says production averaged 432,000 gross oil-equivalent barrels per day,, its highest first-quarter production in 30 years and up from 419,000 barrels per day in the same period of 2020.

Refinery throughput averaged 364,000 barrels per day, compared with 383,000 a year earlier.

Green shift? How the trucking sector is exploring ways to power big rigs into the future

Alberta hydrogen truck pilot project is among those putting new tech to the test

SNIP

Daimler, the world's largest maker of heavy trucks, began testing a hydrogen prototype long-haul truck this spring. Volkswagen-owned Scania, a major manufacturer of trucks and buses for heavy transport, said this year that battery electric vehicles will be the main tool to drive its shift toward sustainable transport.

SNIP

For one, both the Alberta and federal governments have big plans to grow the "blue" hydrogen sector and create jobs, with transport as one potential market. The strategy has met with criticism from environmentalists, however.

"This is how we double-down on our common mission," Natural Resources Minister Seamus O'Regan said this month as the federal government announced $2.3 million in funding for a hydrogen filling station for the Alberta trucks project.

"Net-zero emissions by 2050, but also a prosperous economy that continues to create good jobs, and a low-carbon future that leaves no one behind, not energy workers nor energy-producing provinces."

The backers of the Alberta truck project, who believe hydrogen has the potential to deliver for the long-haul sector in Canada, will put the technology through its paces next year.

The Alberta Zero-Emissions Truck Electrification Collaboration project is developing two heavy-duty, 64-tonne hybrid trucks with hydrogen fuel cells. The trucks will be built in Toronto and Montreal before being shipped out to Edmonton when ready."

This is really interesting.

The collaboration between the feds and Alberta is good to see.

There is a shift happening, one that will take time and effort, but it is a shift. I doubt that say, a pipe fitter, cares if he/she is working on a hydrogen plant or a oil sands plant. Or maybe they do? The hydrogen plant may or may not be be a more stable employer in the future.

I get why some die hard "greenies" are dissing this, but they need to realize that it is a transition. The feds have signed a deal with Germany to develop hydrogen technologies, and when you see big companies like Daimler and Volkswagen getting involved, this is a serious effort. The end result target is green hydrogen, but it may take some time to get there. Hydrogen is a critical potential technology for Canada because of our large distances, And bear in mind that Germany has the world's first hydrogen powered train. Plus JCB is already making hydrogen powered backhoes etc. on a limited scale. So the potential to dramatically reduce GHGs from commercial transport of all kinds is huge. Won't happen overnight, but if it works out, and I think it will, there could be a lot of jobs for Canadians and smoother transition.
The middle path - everything in moderation, and everything in its time and order.
