Dangerous toys - those were the days
I recall being able to buy a gag from the back of comic books. It was a small wooden stick, that when inserted into your parent's cigarette and lit, would explode in their face. Those were the good old days.
Besides the lawn dart, do you remember having toys that in hindsight were rather dangerous?

Not so much a toy but firecrackers used to light off ourselves as kids.

Those little pellet guns that fired peas that were painted silver to look like bullets. I think it was a spring loaded gun but were prime fodder for the "you'll put your eye out" speech.

Lawn darts is one the always gets mentioned.
Otherwise, some of the "Science kits" of the 30's-50's contained some very nasty chemicals, etc.
Check out this "Atomic Energy Lab" kit sold in the 50's - which contained actual uranium.

Jarts, they were called Jarts
That Science kit is a great find :) I didn't have any dangerous toys ( darn) just remember the Playground of Death with metal slides that burned your flesh, and the SuperSonic spinner.

"Creepy crawlers".....were those the things where you put some sort of liquid rubber into a metal mold and then heated it up to produce a rubber worm or spider or other things?Fancy wrote:Creepy crawlers - loved the original

My BIL received a Superman costume as a B Day gift. Even tho the tiny print stated the costume would not make you able to fly..

Yep, by just adding charcoal from a campfire to those two ingredients, you had black gunpowder. That was fun too.oldtrucker wrote:TylerM4 wrote:Lawn darts is one the always gets mentioned.
If you ever find one of the chem sets at a garage sale or wherever....they always seem to have the sulfur and potassium nitrate used up
Edit: I recall that the correct ratios were provided by Encyclopedia Britannica.
There's some great stuff here. Fond memories of those slides

Lady - I can smell the flesh burning. Still have a scar on my ankle caught in a kite string. Thought I was going airborne with it.
