As did Daily Mail. They had it as their main story for a few hours this morning.
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/articl ... -701114123
215 pairs of tiny shoes are displayed as mass children’s grave is found at Catholic Church-run 'Indian residential school' in Canada.
The catholic church is taking a beating over this, as they should but I wonder if it will do any good.

Kevin Annette had evidence for the graves 12 years ago, but the government didn't seem interested in looking into the matter further... https://www.kamloopsthisweek.com/news/c ... 1.24324160

http://www.danielnpaul.com/WeWereNotThe ... story.htmlWe Were Not the Savages is a history of the near demise, from a Mi'kmaq perspective, of ancient democratic North American First Nations, caused by the European invasion of the Americas, with special focus on the Mi'kmaq. Although other European Nations, Spain for instance, were in on the slaughter this history relates in detail the actions of only one, Great Britain.
In Great Britain's case it isn't hard to prove culpability because British colonial officials, while representing the Crown, recorded in minute detail the horrors they committed. When reading the records left behind by these individuals one gets the impression that they were proud of the barbarous crimes against humanity that they were committing while they were, using brute force, appropriating the properties of sovereign First Nations Peoples. From my knowledge of what they did I can, without fear of contradiction from men and women of good conscience, use uncivilized savagery to describe it.
The following are some of the methods they used to cleanse the land of its rightful owners: Bounties for human scalps, including women and children, out and out massacres, starvation and germ warfare. These cruel British methods of destruction were so effective that the British came close to realizing their cleansing goal. All North American civilizations under their occupation were badly damaged, many eliminated, and close to 95% of the people exterminated.

Re: Remains of 215 youth found
I wish people would stop bandying the word "genocide" about. Here is the definition:
"the deliberate killing of a large number of people from a particular nation or ethnic group with the aim of destroying that nation or group"
There is absolutely no evidence that anyone was "deliberately killed" at the Kamloops residential school.
These are kids who probably got sick from common diseases like Spanish Influenza, typhoid fever, and TB (just like a lot of non-native kids did during the same time period). I heard a reporter on Global news this morning comparing this to mass graves in Bosnia and Cambodia. That's just ridiculous and there is no similarity.

The UN’s definition of genocide, adopted in 1948, includes:techrtr wrote: ↑May 30th, 2021, 7:29 am I wish people would stop bandying the word "genocide" about. Here is the definition:

... any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group, as such:
(a) Killing members of the group;
(b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
(c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;
(d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;
(e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.
— Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, Article 2[5]
Appears that more than a couple of these may apply.

Re: Remains of 215 youth found
The Canadian Govt uses the term Cultural Genocide
"In June 2015, the TRC released an Executive Summary of its findings along with 94 "calls to action" regarding reconciliation between Canadians and Indigenous peoples. The Commission officially concluded in December 2015 with the publication of a multi-volume final report that concluded the school system amounted to cultural genocide. The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, which opened at the University of Manitoba in November 2015, is an archival repository home to the research, documents, and testimony collected during the course of the TRC's operation. "
Not sure why its a hot button term for some.
If anyone is interested there is a great book called Can you See Us? About a residential school in Manitoba

So, educating children is cultural genocide? Let's say a family moves here from India. They have 5 kids under the age of 12 who speak only Punjabi. They come from a rural area and have never been exposed to technology. When they get go Canada, the parents refuse to let them go to school or learn English because they don't want them exposed to western culture, ideas, language or technology.normaM wrote: ↑May 30th, 2021, 8:57 am The Canadian Govt uses the term Cultural Genocide

Do you think that that is a good thing?
We can change definitions when it's politically expedient. However, the fact is, sending kids to school so they could learn the skills they needed to survive in the modern world simply was not genocide. Sending the Jews to Auschwitz was genocide. Totally different things.

I agree with BC Landlord.BC Landlord wrote: ↑May 29th, 2021, 6:59 am You make no sense. Why would anyone try to educate someone who they wanted exterminated?
Probably what happened is:
- 200 kids slipped on a slippery floor and died accidentally.
- 200 kids ate mouldy bread - back in those days - and got sick. And died.
- A window broke in winter time - cold wind killed 200 kids before teachers noticed.
- 200 kids were born with a genetic condition that made them die early
- 200 kids died at home, but no one noticed until they got to the school. Their parents did it.
There are many ways 200 kids can die in a school. the government working together with a few guys from the Catholic
church never did anything bad. Even now, they're not doing anything bad.

Re: Remains of 215 youth found
Those children didn't go home after school and talk to their parents about their day and what wonderful things they have learned.
Those children were not allowed to speak their language.
Those children were not allowed to keep their beliefs.
Those children were abused.
They wanted their culture to simply disappear.

I can just see what would happen if some posters' kids got sick at school today and were just buried in the back yard of the school.

That's probably what it was especially back then. Sadly on twitter and social media there always has to be "outrage". If the Natives knew about the burial site and always thought it was there why bring it up now?techrtr wrote: ↑May 30th, 2021, 7:29 am I wish people would stop bandying the word "genocide" about.
