Liberals kill anti-sewage-dumping bill
Environmental hypocrisy: the Liberals kill a much-needed bill that would require municipalities to stop dumping into our waterways.
How can anyone take this stinking pile of hypocrisy seriously? And what about those "Green Party" and NDP twits joining the Liberals in their efforts to escalate pollution of our waters?

Liberals kill bill that would ban dumping raw sewage into Canadian waters

Liberal MPs joined fellow parliamentarians from the Green Party, the NDP and the Bloc Quebecois to vote down a bill that would make it illegal to dump raw sewage in Canadian waters.
Bill C-269, which was introduced by Conservative MP Andrew Scheer, would exclude raw sewage from a list of exemptions the federal government can grant meaning that future governments would not be able to give permission for entities to dump untreated sewage.
“The environment, like so many issues, is a subject on which the Liberals are all talk and no real substance. This Prime Minister has become world famous for this,” said Scheer during the bill’s first reading on May 10.
“The Prime Minister was very successful at portraying himself as someone who was serious about the environment. However, at the very first opportunity, he literally flushed that down the toilet by allowing Montreal, instead of treating that waste water and protecting our precious natural environment, to dump it, untreated and full of all the dangerous substances that were contained within it, into a vital water artery.”

Critics, environmentalists dump on Scheer's raw sewage bill
"A recently proposed private member’s bill that would make it a criminal offence to dump raw sewage in waters frequented by fish was dismissed as a step backwards by environmentalists and opposing MPs.
Bill C-269, proposing changes to the Fisheries Act, was tabled by former leader of the Conservative Party of Canada Andrew Scheer, and underwent second reading May 10.
The proposed changes would basically be a return to the laws under the old Fisheries Act, which were ineffective and rarely enforced, said Mark Mattson, environmental lawyer and president of Swim Drink Fish Canada."
>snip<
"Under the old act, it was a criminal offence to deposit deleterious substances like sewage into waters frequented by fish, and in 2012, it was amended to allow ministers to authorize potential violations and deposits of deleterious substances.
The amendments essentially exempted sewage treatment plants from the charge of putting a “deleterious” substance — in this case sewage — in the water, said Mattson. It was replaced with Canada’s Wastewater Systems Effluent Regulations (WSER) to enable community-based specific regulations to be put in place to speed up improvements.
The overall health of the water has improved since then, Mattson said. Thanks to the WSER framework, all water utilities now have to publish data about discharges of sewage. Mattson said this transparency wasn’t possible when dumping sewage was a criminal offence because the data could be used as evidence against utility companies."

Andrew Scheer's private member's bill C-269 was widely viewed as nothing more than an election stunt, and effort to put a "green" face on the CPC while placing a huge tax burden on towns and municipalities who may have simply not had the money to meet the five year window the bill proposed.

$400 billion deficit this year and we still "have to" dump crap into our waterways? Should we have spent bliions painting murals on bike paths or should we have spent billions on abating pollution and finally getting clean drinking water for our First Nations?fluffy wrote: ↑Jun 27th, 2021, 7:53 am Andrew Scheer's private member's bill C-269 was widely viewed as nothing more than an election stunt, and effort to put a "green" face on the CPC while placing a huge tax burden on towns and municipalities who may have simply not had the money to meet the five year window the bill proposed.
Should we have given a billion to WE or should we have used it to fix Montreal's sewage plant?
Yeah, boo hoo for crap-spewing towns like Montreal.
The election stunt was Trudeau's failure to challenge Quebec to do its share to stop polluting. Gotta exempt his voter base from tackling tough issues that will make a drastic difference for our environment.
Clearly, the left does nothing but virtue signal when it comes to protecting our environment.

The topic you started was Scheer's private member's bill, which got the treatment it deserved. If you want to talk about environmental policy in general there's probably enough meat there for a separate thread. We could start with O'Toole's carbon-tax-that-isn't-a-carbon-tax, or the nothing burger he's serving up to deal with corporate polluters.Gone_Fishin wrote: ↑Jun 27th, 2021, 8:36 am$400 billion deficit this year and we still "have to" dump crap into our waterways? Whataboutism - typical response from Trudeau's minions when the hypocrisy of the woke left is discussed.
Rather easy to see that the Greens and NDP protected their lunatic fringe in Victoria as well, one of the other major *bleep*-spewing municipalities in Canada.
Some people care for the environment and put forth concrete action. The left lies compulsively about what they'll do in order to suck in a gullible voter base.

Given that the source quoted is a CPC mouthpiece pretending to be something else, and really just a right wing "click bait for $$" operation, the "article" is bound to be trash.PoplarSoul wrote: ↑Jun 27th, 2021, 7:34 am

Very misleading article.
Sewage is a long standing problem in Canada, and because of the scale of the problems and local contexts, not an easy one to fix. Just look at how long it has taken Victoria to build a proper facility (and it still has issues).
The existing fisheries act already prohibits dumping sewage into fish bearing waters, unless specific exemptions are granted. We know that Vancouver does it because of poor design in their sewage pipe system (it overflows when extreme rain conditions happen). To install a proper system would require mega bucks and much time - so removing the specific exemption allowances would end up with an untenable situation. Vancouver is, however, working on the issue: https://vancouver.ca/home-property-deve ... water.aspx
Scheer's bill was always suspect, in fact a political ploy and "poison pill" for any party in power. It had nothing to do with improving the environment. Even Elizabeth May voted against it. The Bloc voted against it. The NDP voted against it. most independents voted against it including JWR but not Derek Sloan. It got defeated 211-120.
C-269 was just more "Scheer nonsense" from the CPC.

The leftist have shown their true colours when it comes to the environment. All virtue-signaling, zero action.
Seriously, who votes in favour of pouring human excrement into lakes and rivers?

Why did you capitalize "scheer" - that just seems rather silly and dumb. It was a total concrete action, and a brilliant move by the CPC. I can't believe that the other parties, who pride themselves on being communists and adherents to the evil man-made climate change lie, are not supporting this legislation. For shame, you evil horrible parties. Just so disgusting, and so evil. Thank goodness we have the CPC, the only centrist party in Canada, who are truly representing the values of the majority of Canadians.
