Steve dispatched the Coast Guard to do a comprehensive search in the Arctic for the ships of the lost Franklin expedition. They searched far and wide, and for some reason also did some seismic work as well. The seismic work didn't help find the lost ships, but it did yield lots of information about possible oil under the Arctic ocean. And if they only asked locals about the ships, they would have told them to look "there", because knowledge of the wreck sites was part of local folklore. Seismic work paid for you and I for BigOil.

Steve's reward: a seat of the board of directors of BigOil after leaving the PM job. It's just part of the Conservative culture.

Not the right thing to do.
For many years, Canada was a model nation when it came to international human rights. It has played a leadership role in the international community seeking to improve international governance, instigated crucial treaties, created peaceful resolution of disputes, and generally stood up for human rights.

This sterling record has long been a core part of Canadian national identity – but today, that identity seems to be in peril.

Not only has Canada not yet signed the humanitarian Arms Trade Treaty, it has recently brokered a $15 billion deal with Saudi Arabia, one of the world’s most noted human rights violators.

And how many times ad nauseam have we heard about JT's taxpayer spending spree so I think it's fair to point out some of Harper's taxpayer funded self branding. There is a reason why the CPC didn't have a surplus during their time except for the first year that they got courtesy of the Libs.

That $75-million in ads you paid for
What is the proper word? Is it brazen? Shameless? Unprincipled? Immoral? Choose the word that you think best suits the Harper government's unprecedented use of public money for self-promotion.

Let's not be precious, of course. Other federal governments have promoted themselves using what the Harper government jokingly calls "hard-working taxpayers' " money. None, however, has done it so openly, lavishly, frequently and unashamedly. And if you think this government has been misusing your money to this point, just wait until the April 21 federal budget.

With just six months between the budget and October's federal election, the sluice gate of advertising spending will be open wide. The money will come from taxpayers and from the party itself.

Recently, the government had to report the amount it spent on advertising. It was $75-million a year for 2013-14, up from $69-million the previous year. This being an election year, the figure will likely be higher still. We already know that the government has allocated $7.5-million for spending to tout the budget's virtues.

That means anyone who watches the forthcoming Stanley Cup playoffs can expect a deluge of advertising, because the government prefers to use hard-working taxpayers' money in the most expensive time slots: hockey playoffs, Super Bowl, Academy Awards.

The explanation given for this spending is shameless, the kind of explanation that gives politicians a bad name everywhere as systematic liars. We need to spend the money, the government says, in order to explain how taxpayers' money is being spent. Yet anyone who has watched the Harper government's advertisements knows they are there for promotion, not information.

How many ethics probes did Stephen Harper face in his decade as Canada’s Prime Minister?
So this isn't really a fair question as the ethics commission was formed during Harpers time in office. That said Harper was not investigated by the ethics commission, but his government faced 8 ethics investigations from July 2007 till Trudeau took over. Quite a few high profile ministers in Harpers government were investigated during their 9 years in power while the ethics commission existed. Of those 8 investigations wrong doing was confirmed in 5 of them.
https://www.quora.com/How-many-ethics-p ... e-Minister

Harper brought in the toothless Ethics Legislation and purposely made it weak because he didn't want his own party members ensnared in their own ethics legislation. On top of that he appointed an ineffective and pro-Harper commissioner to head the Ethics Commission.
“Ethics Commissioner Mary Dawson is so ineffective that the media, not her, have revealed all of the ethics violations in federal politics in the past five years, while she has let dozens of Conservatives off the hook for clear violations and made more than 80 secret rulings, and so clearly the ethics law needs to be strengthened to ensure proper and effective enforcement and thousands of Canadians are calling on the House Committee to strongly recommend these and other key changes to stop unethical politicians and lobbyists.”

I wonder if Contempt of Parliament counts as an ethics violation, Im thinking it does, then it would be Harper 2 to JT's none.

What is interesting to me is that under "he who shall not be named"'s tenure people were actually accused of crimes and convicted. Not just ethics fopahs - but full on breaking the law. For instance - Michael Sona. He made a very undistinguished list with "he who shall not be named" minions. Jail time - shady deals - and the list goes on. Meanwhile Conservative influencers moan and wail about Trudeau "ethics" committees.

Excellent link nucks, I haven't come across this story and this one is particularly delicious for all the JT HATERS and the SNC "ethics violation" squakers......compared to this.....
Arthur “Artful Dodger” Porter

Harper appointed Porter to the Security Intelligence Review Committee in 2008.

Porter resigned in 2011 after the National Post revealed he was allegedly wetting his beak in shady business dealings with an Israeli arms dealer and the government of Sierra Leone. After he flew the coop to Panama, Porter was arrested by Interpol in 2014 on charges that he received $22.5 million in kickbacks from engineering firm SNC-Lavalin after awarding them a massive construction contract while CEO of McGill University Health Centre in Montreal.
At least no one in JT circle was gifting like this.....WOW!!

These guys really were crooks. And not very smart ones.

Feds spend $700,000 in court fighting veterans class-action lawsuit
-----

“Spending $700,000 a year to fight vets in court is not supporting our troops,” NDP Leader Tom Mulcair fumed during one heated question period exchange with Harper.

“Closing nine veteran services offices is not supporting our troops, either.”
-----

“Taxpayers deserve better. I think if taxpayers knew that this government, Stephen Harper, was spending so much on lawyers — government lawyers — to fight the wounded in court, they would appalled.”

I see the usual JT haters going on and on about JT and Cuba and thinking this isn't new. I don't think many people know about it because as usual with Harper, the meeting was cloaked in secrecy. JT is just continuing the .....cough cough.....relationship Harper started with the big bad communist scurge Castro. So if the JT hater gang want to blame the relationship of Canada to the Communist regime of Castro and Cuba, you don't have to look no further than Harper.

Harper meets Castro, but we had to look to Cuba for the photo
Canadian media weren't invited or even told the meeting was taking place.......

So we went to a Cuban source instead.

"At the meeting with the Prime Minister of Canada, Stephen Harper, has highlighted the good relations with that northern country," reads the caption of a photo on the website Granma.cu, the "official voice" of the Communist Party of Cuba's Central Committee.
https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/harper ... -1.3031064
Prime Minister Stephen Harper says he is now convinced the best way to draw Cuba toward democracy is through “engagement” with other western hemisphere nations — not “continued isolation.” .........

I have become convinced, our government has become convinced, that we are at a point in the hemisphere, and at a point in Cuba — including our own understanding of the mood on the ground in Cuba — that we are at a point where engagement is more likely to lead us to where we want to go than continued isolation,” Harper told journalists........

“It’s a political relationship, a tourist relationship, a commercial relationship to some degree. One that we want to expand.”

The U.S. and Cuba are in the midst of negotiations to fully restore diplomatic ties, and Obama used his speech to focus on how it is important to leave the past behind after a half-century of deep mistrust between the two nations.

“The United States will not be imprisoned by the past — we’re looking to the future,” said Obama, who added that the Cold War has been over a long time.

“I’m not interested in having battles that frankly started before I was born.”
https://ottawacitizen.com/news/politics ... f-americas

So it's kinda ironic that JT bashers are accusing him of being pro communist Cuban enabler but now that it turns out Harper was a Castro lover as well, Im sure the tune will be a little different.

Did you look at the thread title? In the JT thread, specifically to write about JT, that topic has been discussed ad nauseam. Fee free to wonder over there and have a look at the rebuttals.

btw.....what's the new uncolonized math? I don't think I've heard of that as part of New Math.

Harper government
In case you hadn't noticed, Harper has been out of Office for about 7 years now. We collectively gave him the "boot" and replaced him with someone we thought would do better. Someone who promised to "do politics differently".

But that someone lied.

The Leader of the Opposition is now Erin O'Toole. And he really WILL do politics differently.
