Drug users sue Government
I must admit, I hadn't thought of this angle. So what would they be looking for, a financial settlement?

Doesn't seem to be asking for money ... though I haven't read the full claim ... just seems like they're asking for less stigmaThe civil claim, among other things, asks the court to strike down all drug possession offences, as well as certain drug trafficking offences related to subsistence.

I'm not sure a court can even do what they seem to be asking.

Again another ridiculous concept.
Doesn't anyone think things through ?
"Decriminalize elicit drugs" ????
Is that going to solve anything ?
How about change the rules for prescribing drugs. Consider drug addiction a medical problem and allow prescription drug maintenance by physicians.
We should be doing more to eliminate elicit drug importation, trafficking and possession once we have medical treatment for drug addiction in place.

I think that's the purpose of it. A doctor cannot prescribe a drug even in a maintenance dose for an addict unless it's decriminalized first. These drugs are very strictly regulated exactly because doctors have been criticized for prescribing them for legitamate reasons.my5cents wrote: ↑Sep 2nd, 2021, 9:02 pm Again another ridiculous concept.

I'm taking the meaning of "illicit drugs" as non-prescription, street drugs. The drugs prescribed by doctors, I don't define as illicit drugs, even if a doctor mis-prescribes drugs, the act of prescribing is illegal but not the drug. The use of the word "illicit", perhaps is unwise.Silverstarqueen wrote: ↑Sep 3rd, 2021, 1:40 amI think that's the purpose of it. Non-medical drugs, street drugs should never be decriminalized.
We shouldn't be suggesting decriminalization of elicit drugs, we should be talking about re-defining medical purpose and prescription regulations for doctors.
If that's the goal (redefining prescription parameters) that's what should be stated. I don't think a law suit is the solution.
The linked news item states:
"A group representing drug users has filed a lawsuit against the federal government in British Columbia Supreme Court seeking to decriminalize the possession of illicit drugs, arguing criminalization during the overdose crisis violates charter rights."

Since 1980, the US has spent a cumulative trillion dollars on the war on drugs and they are losing. Badly.my5cents wrote: ↑Sep 2nd, 2021, 9:02 pm Again another ridiculous concept.

I am not saying that we should give up but I'm not sure how much more money is going to do?

Re: Drug users sue Government
If the purpose of the law suit is to change the way in which doctors are approved to prescribe drugs to addicts then that would be what should be announced.Silverstarqueen wrote: ↑Sep 3rd, 2021, 1:40 am I think that's the purpose of it. The statement:

Isn't : "seeking to modify the parameters in which doctors can legally prescribe opiate drugs to addicts"
So unless the news item is incorrect and completely off the mark the suit involves seeking to decriminalizing illicit drug possession. Since illicit drug are the poison that is killing drug users, I see absolutely no benefit. We need to continue to keep illicit drug importation, sale, and possession. Not only illegal but the subject of stiffer penalties.
In Canada we are in another dilemma. Even if we allow doctors to prescribe opiate drugs to addicts, how do we curb the use of illicit drugs ? Yes, with doctor prescribed opiate drug replacement, a segment of our addicted population will confine their drug use to those prescription drugs and perhaps some will take advantage of programs to reduce and maybe eliminate the need.
There is a segment of drug users who would regard legal prescription drugs as a good start to a day, but not the solution.
With our Canadian sentencing laws we've set the "high bar" at life with parole in usually 10 years for the most serious crime of murder. If we can't completely remove the market for illicit drugs, our laws won't deter anyone from still plying their drug importing/dealing trade.
