I am looking at 3 in the local harbor, which haven't been touched in many years.
They all need a considerable amount of work, but I can probably get one for cheap and fix it up.
My 2 cents: Stay with a fiberglass hull. liveaboard, min. 30 feet. If you can swing it, get a survey done on the boat. That will pick up any issues with the gel-coat for example and give you a pretty good state of affairs.
Check through hull fittings and the seals/caulking. Perhaps consider, in your budget, to get the boat up on the hard and pressure wash the bottom and paint. Crud on the hull is not good for the gel-coat and if you take it out for a sail, the boat becomes so slow, tides will push you around. Tides up your way easily can be 2-5 knots.

There is something when people say boats are a hole in the water you pour money into. However, You are clever and I suspect can give a run down boat another life. Just has to have good "bones" to start with.
Great project Stu.

Thank you for the advice Seewood,

I think I may have found the boat, although it's only 26 feet.
I spoke to the owner this morning and will be meeting her in person tomorrow morning.
She bought it 2 years ago and hasn't used it once.
However she has had the motor tuned, and a new main sail is in dry storage.
She has taken some of the teak out and refinished it.
Then lost interest in it.

I actually spoke to the mechanic who tuned the motor and has sailed her.
He said it's well designed and fast

I have often eyed this boat is and doubt and I can afford her.
However she is a good friend of a friend, and really wants me to have it.
So the price may be reduced or she may let me finance it over the winter m

Oh the Thatch was just the restaurant serving quick take outs and ice cream.
They closed last night.
They were going to build condo's there but discovered it was a First Nations burial site, so it's a mess for now.

Thanks Popping In,

Well I didn't take that one boat.
It's worth it, but I really don't want to spend 5 figures on my first sailboat.
Not to mention, it only needs a good hull cleaning leaving me hanging nothing to do on those rainy days.

I have expressed interest in something a little more suitable for me.
If I get it, I will honestly be copying a few ideas from the first boat.

Don't worry I Queen, she is a nice lady,
However we hardly know each other, and has some baggage to ditch.
I don't feel I am ready for a relationship at this time anyway.
I am going into the one year blues after mom's passing and couldn't drag anyone down with it.

Sorry to hear Stuphoto, one year blues are normal.

In regards to being single, At a certain age baggage is all how you hold the handles. Some grip tightly and some are able to gently release the handle so as the baggage is on the floor, at the feet in the past. Some lug it like a badge of honour. It all shapes us.

Do post photos of your new to you boat if you get one. I hope you are doing well this September. :admin:

Nice to hear you built a Season out of it and worked your way
into the community.

You'll make things work out for the best.

Living on a boat, building boats, and something around for the cooler nights.

What's not to like ? (no answer required)
"Don't 'p' down my neck then tell me it's raining!"

Sorry to have missed you are SeaWood,
I don't blame you for not taking your boat out.

This is another video at Grassy Point today.

I saw some waves well over 4 feet.
At Tribune Bay it is relatively calm.

Same in chemainus. Haven't seen horizontal rain in quite some time.
Heading home tomorrow. I'll make a decision in Hope as to HP or Coq. Depends on freezing level.

Oh Queen, I forgot to mention,
She asked me to the first Beach Fire of the season the other day.
We had a very good time together :smt045
She is a nice lady, and may be part of the reason I haven't rushed back home yet.
