This is bad news for Joe Biden

Joe Biden, as I've written before, is a radical president. Especially when it comes to the role government can and should play in the lives of everyday Americans.

Biden's policy agenda -- from the $1 trillion "hard" infrastructure bill to the as-yet-unpriced social safety net package -- would, if passed, fundamentally alter the relationship we have with government.

In short: The era of small government (such as it ever existed) would be over. The era of expansive government would begin.

Except that a majority of Americans don't want more government in their lives, according to new data from Gallup.

In the poll, just 43% said they wanted government to "do more to solve the country's problems," while 54% said they thought that government "is doing too many things that should be left to individuals and businesses."

That's a MAJOR shift in public opinion from where we were just one year ago, when 54% -- a record high in Gallup polling -- said they wanted government to do more to solve the country's problems.

That reaction, quite clearly, was the result of the Covid-19 pandemic -- and a general desire for the federal government to do whatever it could to get the country through the worst of it.

President Biden, like his predecessor, simply isn't doing enough to ease the pressure on the supply chain issues plaguing almost every port in the United States.

His announcement of expanding the hours at the LA port to help with the congestion of 60 ships currently anchored at sea will do virtually nothing to ease the pressure. The problem won't be solved by keeping the lights on longer when there isn't enough skilled labour, trucks, drivers, or storage for everything arriving.

The problems at the ports aren't a recent development and began 2 years ago during Trump's presidency and he did nothing to begin to solve it, and Biden's strategy won't do anything either. The issues have simply become much worse over the last several months due to increasing volume and a lack of strategy and infrastructure to handle it.

Biden is only acting on it now because inflation has become an issue going into next year's midterm elections and he needs to be seen doing something due to the port issues being one of the biggest reasons for the problem. To the general public, extending the port hours seems to be a natural and easy fix but to those who actually know what's going on, it's clear it won't do much of anything given the complexity of the situation. It's simply not good enough.

There is no easy fix for this. Steps should have been taken years ago or at the very least 18 months ago when it was clear the port problems weren't going away.

The problem is real and isn't going away any time soon and I expect it will get even worse as goods for the holiday shopping season start arriving. Unfortunately this isn't just media hype.

And for anyone who cares, the situation at the Port of Vancouver has become just about as bad. There's just not enough equipment, drivers, and storage to handle the massive volume of goods arriving... it's become essentially gridlocked.

Biden has also been President for several months and the problem already existed the day he became President - and so far the only thing he came up with was to keep the lights on a bit longer... even though they don't have the labour, equipment, or infrastructure for it to make any difference.

It's much more than just companies that shifted their manufacturing offshore. It's agriculture, raw materials, etc... that are being affected as well. The US doesn't produce all of the food it eats nor does it have access to all of the raw materials their manufacturers need to produce goods. A lot of small businesses rely on overseas manufacturing as well... they simply don't have the scale necessary to produce their goods themselves.

The world of importing and exporting is one that a lot of people have no knowledge of and it's much more complicated than most people realize. The scale is almost unimaginably large and complicated. There are currently 500,000 containers out at sea on ships waiting to be unloaded at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, and Biden thinks keeping the lights on without any additional labour and equipment will do something to help this.

This backlog severely affects Canadian companies as well. Depending on the origin, a lot of ships make stops in Los Angeles and Seattle before making it to Vancouver. If they can't first get unloaded in the US it causes delays arriving to Canada as well.

The Washington Post was ripped Tuesday after publishing a piece calling on "spoiled" Americans to stop ranting about short-staffed businesses and supply chain issues, and instead lower their expectations in the hope that things will get straightened out.

"Time for some new, more realistic expectations," columnist Micheline Maynard wrote after describing how Americans were used to fast service and easy access to consumer products until the coronavirus pandemic disrupted the supply chain. "American consumers, their expectations pampered and catered to for decades, are not accustomed to inconvenience."

Maynard claimed that consumers would be doing themselves a favor by "consciously lowering expectations" instead of taking their frustrations out on shop owners and delivery people. She also described how the disruptions were affecting business owners from their perspective.

Critics quickly excoriated the piece on social media, with some suggesting that lowering expectations was "becoming the theme of Joe Biden’s America," and others suggesting such a "mantra" could negatively impact Democrats heading into the midterm elections.
