This is just LeGault playing the same "victim" card that Kenney and Moe constantly play. "Boohooo! Ottawa is being unfair to us!" It makes no sense, but when did such low flying politics ever make any sense?

Prediction: Quebec gets to keep its 78 seats...BUT...2 new seats are added elsewhere. Same effect, but LeGault gets claim to "a win".

They don't think they're more important; they're just smart enough to put their votes up for grabs so they're in a position to bargain.

Quebec votes federally for whoever gives them the best deal. They've gone Conservative, Liberal, BQ and even NDP.

Contrast this with folks in Alberta and Saskatchewan who would elect wet bags of monkey dung if they were painted blue. (And more often than not, do.) Thus, the Cons take them for granted, and the Libs couldn't care less.

It's a lot more complicated than that.

Number changed, but at the last census, the population of Canada was 35,151,728 and we had 338 Federal seats. That works out to 103,999 citizens per seat.

The problem is 6 provinces and the three territories don't have 103,999 citizens.

So we gave each territory one seat, even though added together they would only qualify for one seat.

All the maritime provinces are out of proportion. If we are talking seats per citizen, the most out of line province is PEI, it has 35,727 citizens, less than any of the territories and it has 4 seats !

What Quebec, apparently, is asking for is a guarantee that the government won't re-align the numbers and give Quebec less than 78 seats, which they have now. At this moment they have 104,671 citizens per seat, so almost dead on the percentage alignment of the total seats to total Canadian population.

Not really anything world shaking to ask for. Actually the three provinces who are under represented by population are Ontario, British Columbia, and Alberta.

I haven't read anywhere that Canada is going to increase the number of seats. Quebec just wants to retain the seats that they have and if any are realigned they don't loose any.

If I was realigning seats, the provinces I'd be looking at (in this order) :
• PEI
• Newfoundland
• New Brunswick
• Saskatchewan
• Nova Scotia

Then I agree with FairlyNew. If they think a jurisdiction like Alberta, whomever should have more seats to get nearer to the percentage, take one or two from the maritime provinces.
