Canadian Milk Board sucks

It's about time the Government allows US dairy products to be sold in Canada.
The Dairy Producers have been approved for an 8+ % increase in milk prices. The milk board is controlled by the Dairy Farmers with NO INPUT from the people who buy the Dairy Products..

GET RID OF THE MILK BOARD and open up the market.

Chances are dairy farmers probably won’t see any 8% increase, I suspect they be lucky to see even a third of this increase.

As for opening border only if products coming north are completely free of antibiotics & growth hormones. Which are not used in Canada, only in the US.

I’ve actually tried a number of these substitutes, for most part they taste terrible with at least 1 exception Cashew.

US milk is full of growth hormones and tastes lousy. If you want to feed that junk to your kids because you think $5 for 4L is too much, check your priorities.

The dairy industry is heavily subsidized by government in the US. That's why products are cheaper.

The advantage of Cashew unsweetened is the lack carbs & sugars.

8% increase is not enough, it should be 10%+ We need to support our dairy farmers.

Those complaining about an 8% increase and how they can't buy milk, are the same people cheering a 25% increase in RCMP funding. Also, everything is going up in price, houses, fuel, food, entertainment. We are back in an inflating environment.

Yeah, for sure. With all those growth hormones that the US farmers feed their cows, the milk would allow our kids to reach the same high level of juvenile obesity that American kids have.

Back when we were shipping milk from our dairy farm it was processed in Vernon at NOCA. NOCA was purchased by Dairyland and some time later the facilities were shutdown and everything moved to lower mainland.

btw for those wondering what NOCA stands for: North Okanagan Creamery Association

US prices are heavily subsidized, and deregulated so that their dairy products can be full of hormones and other nasty items. https://www.greenqueen.com.hk/us-animal ... th-damage/

Yes, the milk marketing board is a form of subsidy, however most of that subsidy goes to the farmer. The US subsidies mostly wind up in the pockets of corporations like Kraft...

And yup, I am quite happy paying an extra 50 cents per liter to have hormone free and minimal nasty chems in my milk. It isn't a big deal. But then we only go through about 8 liters a week.

The issue with the government allowing constant mergers and acquisitions to kill local employment is widespread, and they need to give their heads a shake. Allowing uber rich to strip mine the economy that way is unacceptable.

For me this issue is not about American milk. Easy peasy to bring in restrictions not allowing in milk that doesn't meet our standards.

This issue is about consumers paying inflated prices.

Eliminate ALL marketing boards.
I'm posting this from Traditional lands of the British Empire & the current Lands of The Dominion of Canada.
I also give thanks for this ethos richness bestowed on us via British Colonialism.

I agree.

It doesn’t require a “marketing” board to ensure quality. Their only purpose is to gouge your wallet.
Sufficiently advanced incompetence is indistinguishable from malice. There’s a certain point at which ignorance becomes malice, at which there is simply no way to become THAT ignorant except deliberately and maliciously.

This issue pops up now and then, but it is basically a red herring used for political purposes, with no one actually going to change it. This is an interesting article from a previous round do nothing political nonsense: https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/analys ... -1.1186293

Within that lengthy article are a couple of key comparisons.

"In New Zealand, one of the countries thought to be pushing hardest for Canada to give up supply management, the price farmers receive for their milk is among the lowest in the world, leading to larger-scale "factory" farms trying realize economies of scale. Meanwhile, New Zealand consumers pay prices equal to or higher than average prices in Canada. The extra money is somewhere, but it's not in the pockets of farmers or consumers."

Yup, no marketing board - farmers get paid diddly doo for their milk produced, and consumers actually pay MORE in 2012 than we do in Canada. Updating that indicates that we do pay more than New Zealand consumers in 2021: https://www.globalproductprices.com/ran ... lk_prices/ - but not a huge amount more given than New Zealand is constantly in surplus production and have been unable to ship the excess out due to the pandemic related issues for shipping.

"What Canadians don't pay are government subsidies for supply-managed products. For last decade, the dairy and poultry industries haven't drained the Canadian taxpayer to the tune of billions the way their counterparts have in the United States, Europe or elsewhere.

"If I was the federal government, I would like supply management because it costs me nothing," Doyon says.

In Canada, the price of milk pays the full cost of producing it. Supply-managed commodities do not need the millions of dollars in bailouts and other risk-management programs the federal government regularly provides to pork, beef or grain farmers.

"Americans pay for their milk twice: once at the store, and once through billions in subsidies," says Bruce Muirhead, a trade policy researcher at the University of Waterloo. "Our system is one the rest of the world should come to."

So - higher taxes (or bigger government deficits) in exchange for lower prices for inferior quality milk? The consumer pays anyway, the farmer gets squeezed, and the product is inferior... https://grist.org/article/food-2010-10- ... free-milk/ ....and fewer jobs as "big corporate farms" squeeze out smaller farmers as the only way to make $$$ in the production end. AND rBST hormones in your milk, plus other nasties....

No thanks. What we have ain't perfect, but there is nothing to gain for the consumer, and everything to lose.

And stop and think about this: we pay more for iPhones in Canada than Americans pay. https://www.globalproductprices.com/ran ... ne_prices/ and the % is not that far off from the milk price price comparison. Canadian consumers always get hosed by the big corporations - so IF we "corporatize" our dairy industry by dumping the marketing board system, we will gain absolutely nothing and wind up with lower quality milk with fewer jobs and fewer family farms. Makes no sense.
