Based on several posts on Twitter, it seems that Tesla owners around the world are reporting not being able to connect their phone to their vehicle or, in some cases, not even being able to start the car.

Future is looking like highly taxed electric bills, nothing new.

Another story just for kicks, apparently if you are out of cell range or the network is busy or the server is hacked, Tesla owners around the world would be locked out of their vehicles. When I want to drive I don't want permission from any server or anyone, especially in an emergency. If a server attack can leave everyone with a Tesla stranded then screw that brand.

What they didn't have a fob or an access card? Internet connectivity is just one of the ways to run the car....so what's the problem again?

In the EV friendly state of California, 20% of EV owners switch back to gas powered vehicles. The main reason is due to lack of 240V charging at home. California plans to ban ICE vehicles for 2035 which is impossible. Not to mention, numerous Condo associations and parking lots are banning EVs due to fire hazard. Any vehicle can start ablaze, but EVs burn extremely hot and the fire cant be put out.

EVs to save the planet? It’s just a joke, and new spin on vehicle marketing. Hauling around big heavy batteries is an energy waste! It is more energy efficient to have a light-weight vehicle, no matter what type of energy is used.

Lighter = less energy to move. Physics 101.

I know someone with two identical vehicles, except that one is Plug-in hybrid, and the other is gas. On the highway, the gas model gets far better economy than the plug-in hybrid. The owner says it is due to hauling around the big heavy battery in the plug-in model. The only way the plug-in gets lower running cost, is driving in town where it can use grid electricity that currently has no road tax and has yet to see higher electricity rates. He says he wouldn’t have bought the plug-in model if he’d known of the false economy.

The best combination is a Hybrid; as it can operate on electric and/or gas, generates its own electricity, no range anxiety, a reasonable size light battery that collects energy to contribute to city drives, as well as some highway propulsion. Hybrids are most economical in city driving, but still very good economy on highway, the computer magically and seamlessly using the best combination of electricity or gas. Gas consumption in a hybrid is minimal (3.8L/100 summer city for the most popular hybrid).

Car companies are pushing pure electric (EV), because they’re cheaper to build than a hybrid. Plug-in hybrids might be best for short-trip (city) driving, so they’re close to a power outlet.

Types to choose from:

- Gas (doesn’t collect free energy from braking and gliding, no battery environmental impact, not likely to leave you stranded in a snowbank). Some gas models with CVT transmissions get near hybrid economy, and a lower purchase price that often more than offsets the energy savings of the high price electrics.

- Hybrid (gas/electric, collects free energy from braking and gliding downhill and stores in adequate size battery, doesn’t take electricity from the grid, no plug-in hassle, minimal battery environmental impact, not likely to leave you stranded in a snowbank). Taxi companies love these because they’re so efficient and reliable.

- Plug-in hybrid (gas/electric, collects free energy from braking and gliding downhill and stores in large heavy battery that also stores enough grid electricity for all around town, but burns more energy carrying the heavy battery on highway, takes electricity from the grid, hassle to plug-in, significant environmental battery impact, not likely to leave you stranded in a snowbank)

- Pure electric EV (takes all electricity from the grid, no gas backup, very heavy battery to drag around everywhere, hassle to plug in, most battery and electricity generation environmental impact, most likely to leave you stranded in a snowbank)

Can I ask which car your friend has? Not looking for an argument, just asking as I'm a car guy and as someone who will be in the market for a new car in the next year or so. I know the RAV4 gets comparable HWY MPG across the board, whether it be the gas/hybrid/plugin - they're all within about a litre per 100km and Toyotas EPA is pretty bang on in the real world for most drivers.

Just curious as to which model they would recommend and why.

I've been browsing the RAV 4 from time to time, the cost of the Hybrid really isn't that much more but I'm wondering if its really worth it - mind you, I do more city driving but we do like our weekend excursions. The Prime, if you can even get one, seems ideal for city driving and if you can charge at home (we can't) - and then there is the concern of battery wear from constant charging and deep cycling. A lot of the Toyota technicians recommend not using EV mode on the hybrids so much.

OKkayak, pretty easy suv vehicle choice of yours, since so-far not much to choose from :130:. The owner’s comparison was on an identical route of several hundred kilometres, so a pretty solid comparison. With such small MPG differences, it really comes down to price recovery. IMO, ordinary hybrid gives most bang for the price, good MPG, dual energy source, doesn’t use grid plugs (generates it’s own electricity), lightish-weight, minimal battery issues, proven technology, and good resale.

I saw it too. Elon Mask as he called it was inside the vehicle. He has had so many views, he’ll probably earn more money from YouTube than he would of off used car parts. It is actually better financially to blow it up.

For sure, it all comes down to price/expense recovery - from the reading up I've been doing over the last couple of months in comparing various cars like the Corolla Hybrid vs Prius and Prius Prime and the Rav4 Hybrid and Rav4 Prime, it seems that the hybrids offer more bang for your buck.
