Are there Greyhound Buses in BC or just poor journalism ?

Post by my5cents »

Last night on the late CTV National News and again on the 11:30 PM CTV Vancouver News, it was reported that the fatal semi/bus crash just west of McBride involved a semi and a "Greyhound Bus".

Serious collisions are always surprising to me, but even more so when I thought there were no Greyhound buses operating in BC.

If I had any confidence in our news media, I'd assume "well I guess there was a Greyhound in BC", but with all our media, sadly, providing inaccurate information and sloppy stories, I'm assuming some "crack" news segment writer doesn't know the difference between a passenger bus and a particular company that runs buses.

Are we at the stage where "Greyhound" bus means a large highway passenger bus, like some call a photocopy a "Xerox".

Saying a Greyhound bus was involved in a collision that resulted in a death, when in fact it was not a bus owned by Greyhound, would undoubtedly not please Greyhound.

This in an age when TV shows like "Highway Thru Hell" (a program highlighting the efforts heavy duty wrecker operators make to keep the mountain highways of BC clear) blurs out the company name of each and every vehicle that has crashed.

Even our own Castanet currently has an article with the headline "Burnaby man says gas thieves siphoned street amid restrictions" https://www.castanet.net/news/BC/352268 ... strictions

I sure hope nobody siphons street from my parked car.

Ya, I know email them and they will fix it. Sorry, I'm not their proof reader. I have pointed out many errors and they are as, or more frequent, than ever. "Give a man a fish and he eats for a day, teach a man to fish and he can eat for a lifetime". Someone needs to teach the media to exercise more care because when they make these flubs it reduced their credibility throughout their industry.

Its just a metaphor, "Greyhound bus" being used to describe a highway coach - the general population does it way more often than the media. Just like every plane bigger than a 737 is a "Jumbo Jet" and so on and so forth. Nothing new.

I was at YYC when WestJet first started their 787 flights and you could hear several people comment that the 787 is an "Air Canada plane" because it's bigger than the 737 WS built their airline on.

Well, on the poor journalism band wagon....

Yesterday's news that there was a new "mud slide" / "washout" (depending on which news outlet you listened to) on Hwy 3, was in actuality engineers taking a second (or more) look at an area of Hwy 3 that they had checked previously and OK'd for travel and while deciding closed the highway down. There was NOT another mud slide, or washout, or landslide or anything it was just closed while they took a closer look at an area they had previously thought was safe to travel on. It was later opened with another lane closed.

You'd think there would be some journalist somewhere that would tell it like it is. If you listened closely to the most recent news items on the "new slide" one could discern that there hadn't been another slide, just a rethinking.

Appears once a mistake is made none in the media fraternity want to expose others, so they dance around the truth.
