Re: Paid sick leave for employees in B.C.
The business mentality needs to get past the 1980's largesse and the Trump multiple failures worship. We need strong businesses that can survive on their own. That will pay enough to attract skilled employees. We need businesses that won't make excuses when the scales tip in favour of the workers. After all, for 40 years workers (union and otherwise) had to grin and bear a stagnant period of wages not growing over this period.

Workers should take advantage of this perk. Businesses never ever miss an opportunity to bilk off of the government. This pandemic was a perfect example. The businesses were subsidized - and their employees were subsidized. Businesses talk a big talk in regards to workers. But what kind of pride does a worker have working for a boss and company that mooches off the government? And then gets looked down upon for doing the same thing by those businesses?Even Steven wrote: ↑Nov 26th, 2021, 6:56 pm I'm the kinda guy who never calls in sick but if I had 5 paid days for it...I'd feel like I'm missing out if I didn't.

Chances are he has a comfy government job. Nice salary and a pension coming one day. Works a 7or 7.5 hour day. Answers to no one after quiting time.Sparki55 wrote: ↑Nov 26th, 2021, 7:59 amYou don't own a business. How about you do go give it a go and fail? You speak about business owners, specifically small business, as lazy people who only take. Well, they aren't any competition for someone as strong and hardworking as you are! Clearly you have a strong opinion here, I'm not trying to change it either, just trying too see if you'll stand behind it.
His inability to understand the struggles of businesses comes from thinking like a government.
Governments don't go broke. They collect money and spend it, always more going out than coming in.
Governments have no competition, therefore no reason to be competitive.
And we all know what happens to businesses that operate like Governments.

Completely wrong.TheLiteralKingofEngland wrote: ↑Nov 26th, 2021, 7:13 pmWhat? Sorry but this isn’t true at all. It’s easier than ever to schedule phone and or online video calls with doctors (so no germs decimating their offices) and many of them have various free appointment slots each day.
Ten days to two weeks just to get a phone appointment.
My wife is on a one year wait list just to see a specialist. Surgery sometime after that.
Our medical system is a dumpster fire.
And now employees will be forking out $50 or more for a note saying they are too sick to work.

Take advantage? Like use the sick days even if they don't need them because you believe all businesses and their employees were subsidized more than you think they should be....nucksRnum1 wrote: ↑Nov 26th, 2021, 7:10 pm Workers should take advantage of this perk. However, we must understand that this person truly believes that those who own businesses should be able to "afford" them and not profit from the fruit. The sole purpose of a business to this person is to give enough money to "talent"

Raise the minimum wage - "This will be the final nail in the coffin for small businesses!"
Add a new Stat Holiday - "This will be the final nail in the coffin for small businesses!"
Require mandatory sick days for all employees like they do in some 140 other countries in the world - "This will be the final nail in the coffin for small businesses!"

This seems so familiar.....where have I heard laments like this before? Oh ya!! Conservatives! Where each and every thing that they don't approve of is a "sky is falling!" moment. I remember when the Greens and NDP formed a government. And the naysayers said that everything was gonna fall apart and become the pit of despair. And it didn't happen. Such liars!

Even thought I don't always vote Conservative, I'm as Conservative as they come. It's actually embarrassing living in such a country like Canada that literally has some of the most antiquated labour laws in the world. Germany for example, they've had mandatory sick days since the 1930s, many other European Countries, not long until after the war - Canada, 90 years later - one Province.nucksRnum1 wrote: ↑Nov 26th, 2021, 9:04 pm

I remember 30 plus years ago working with a German immigrant. And he showed me the gold teeth that were paid for in Germany. Here? Not so much.OKkayak wrote: ↑Nov 26th, 2021, 9:13 pmEven thought I don't always vote Conservative, I'm as Conservative as they come. Raise minimum wage - why is everything getting expensive?
Introduce holidays - why is everything getting expensive?
Introduce new tax- why is everything getting expensive?
Because I want my 20% on the bottom line no matter what, so if the costs go up, do does the price.

why call them '' sick'' days, our company calls them ''personal'' days. if you truly are sick, use that day, if you just want to take a day off for a motorcycle ride, that's fine to. just book a week in advance, so someone can cover for you and off you go on your personal day. if you don't use it within that quarter, you loose it. works well within our company.

So are we talking about actual sick days or a few extra paid days off for those who aren't really sick ?
"That wasn't very data-driven of you."
