New caller ID law now in place to help fight wave of spam/spoof calls

Easiest way is don't answer 800/855/866/888 numbers or numbers you don't recognize. If the caller is legit and they leave a voicemail you can return the call.
Canada's telecommunications regulator is bringing in new laws that will force phone companies to do a better job of identifying who is calling, to help users inundated by nuisance phone calls from telemarketers.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) said in a news release Tuesday that phone companies must now implement a technology on their networks that does a better job of weeding out so-called spoof phone calls, which are calls that look like familiar Canadian phone numbers they may want to answer, but are in fact unsolicited spam and nuisance calls from dodgy companies.

Earlier this month, CRTC chair Ian Scott announced that the regulator was going to compel the phone companies to do more about cracking down on such calls, which he said make up as much as 25 per cent of all phone calls on mobile networks in Canada right now.

Anything I see that isn't someone I know goes immediate block.

Phone is getting good at calling it potential spam as well. I think the company's are trying well to prevent but people need to be aware of the scams that are out there, some are well done but really if it's not a friend, don't reply. Caution is best.

So true. My phone rang twice this morning, both calls were spam. I rarely use my phone for calling, or receiving calls, so my percentage of spam is much higher than 25%.

Whatever happened to the DNC registry or whatever it is.... wasn't that supposed to solve the issues?

It's a scam. They don't follow the rules.
I get calls pretty much everyday, or every other day. Mostly the CBSA one, or CRA.
Man, I gotta lot of warrants out for me...

Funny thing is, occasionally I will call back the number displayed (after listening to the voicemail) and it's a private line that doesn't have a clue what's going on. This morning, it was a warning from Customs about an illegal package, and the # displayed was from Georgia...figure that :135:
Trying to think of something profound, and full of wisdom to place here...any suggestions?

The problem with just saying, "if you don't recognize the number, don't answer," is sometimes the calls are from a legitimate caller. For example, the other day I received a call and I didn't recognize the number. Looked at it and thought, I shouldn't answer this, but did anyways. Good job I did, it was from Interior Health informing me of my upcoming MRI appointment. I have also received calls from various health specialists about appointments and all that shows up on my phone is a strange number. I even had one office tell me not to use that number to call back, as it was a fake number. So, there's another side to this issue.

I have honestly found the best thing is to answer the calls, and politely ask them to remove me from their call list. I let them know I am aware it is a scam, and they are wasting their time calling me so to remove me from their list. Sometimes they hang up, one time they were very disgusting, but most of the time they say okay. I usually can go a few weeks without getting another call when I do this.

A person should not do that either or talk. There are scams out there that will record your voice saying certain things and that will be proof that you just okayed for a new credit card or something similar. Go on YouTube and look up that scam
I tell my father all the time do not even answer because he's tempted to talk to people no matter how many times I've showed him the exact scam happening online. I suggest everybody tell their parents as well not to even answer.

Most of the experts I have read suggest this is not a good idea.

Just hang up!

Ignoring 8xx area code calls might help, but the caller ID on many calls is totally spoofed, including the area code (which often is made to look local).

True, but if I don't recognize the number it goes to voicemail. If I'm near the computer I'll enter the number in a search engine and more often than not, it'll be shown as a spam call on the "whocallsme" site that track numbers.

From a post of mine elsewhere;
100%, the number you see means nothing. We were baiting a scammer, and gave them an RCMP number. They called back (the scammer), showing that RCMP number on call display! These scumbags are calling from overseas (like 90+%), where fines and jail are unlikely.

The Do Not Call list is pretty much useless, as almost all the calls originate from overseas, or are bounced from somewhere outside of Canada.

4 options. #1 is hang up. # 2 is scream DEATH TO YOUR MOTHER, and hang up. #3 play along, pretend your falling for it, and use up as much time as you have to waste, then use option #2. #4, talk softly while doing #3 so they turn up the sound, and then pull #2 😉

In my opinion this is at least a decade too late, if not 2.
The government has also failed to put any real pressure on these countries to reign in these scumbags.

If they are Robo calls then sign up for Telus call control. Have not had one since doing that.
