You don't have to study American politics to know that Trump Republicans aren't the same Republicans from the Reagan Republicans......you'd know that just by paying attention......and seems to me the Canadian right is doing exactly the same as our neighbours (trying to) but as usual in our usual Canadian tepid way.

Re: Free speech in Canada.
Actually it doesn't describe anything. Do you agree with the nutty Suzuki and want to see violent action taken? He's an idiot, basically telling people to go and damage things, all in the name of the man-made climate change fairy tale, ie in the name of something that doesn't even exist.
This has nothing to do with Trump or the mostly peaceful protests on January 6th, and everything to do with stupidity. I am in favour of free speech, so I support the right of the lunatic Suzuki to say what he wants to say, but if it results in blowing stuff up and killing people while doing it, is it really something that he should be saying in public?

No, I don't think speaking about violence is useful ... that's why I used the word "hyperbole" ...

https://nationalpost.com/opinion/john-r ... wless-leftJohn Robson: David Suzuki's 'blown up' pipelines comment symbolizes a lawless left
Nice pipelines you have there. Pity if something were to … happen to them. Thus spake St. David Suzuki, guardian of all that is good and nice in Canada, channeling the mafia.
Not that he was threatening violence when he said “there are going to be pipelines blown up if our leaders don’t pay attention to what’s going on.” Sure, he was speaking at an Extinction Rebellion event and they routinely break the law because they can’t prevail in free votes. But they are clad in the armour of the Lord, or Gaia, and fully justified by their faith.
As the National Post reported , when asked if he supported bombing pipelines, Suzuki replied, “Of course not.” But just in case, “The violence is coming from the authorities, from government, from the RCMP. They’re declaring war against those that are protesting.” So it’s self-defence, à la Andy Capp’s “I thought he was going to hit me so I hit him back first.”
SNIP
The election of Trump was meant to be a warning. Instead it mostly triggered pompous virtue-signalling. And it won’t be easy to explain such things to a Canadian environment minister who broke the law with a smug grin, appointed by a prime minister who thinks rules are for chumps.
Or his voters. My own intensely disgusted political engagement must not blind me to the fact that millions of Canadians admire Trudeau and have no more idea of his ethics violations than of health care waiting lists. But I can say this much to the Davids of this world.
If you are appalled at the rise of the populist right, please try to remember that ordinary people hate disorder, especially flavoured with hypocrisy and scorn. Given your acute awareness of your mental and moral superiority, surely you can win hearts and minds without cheap shots.
Let alone cheap threats.

Re: Free speech in Canada.
impo free speech is alive and well in Canada (as long as violence isn’t the agenda), this said a couple of weeks ago there was event held across our Nation.
This event is the 1 time of the year that other agendas should be kept quiet out of respect.

Re: Free speech in Canada.
Extinction Rebellion doubles down on the stupid, supporting David Suzuki's free speech right to call for violence. In case you wanted to know who the true bad guys are in the whole man-made climate change farce, these are them.
https://www.castanet.net/edition/news-s ... htm#352693Extinction Rebellion Canada says it stands behind the controversial comments made by David Suzuki in B.C.'s capital city over the weekend.
The Canadian environmental icon drew criticism for comments he made at an Extinction Rebellion rally held in Victoria on Saturday (Nov. 20) that drew upwards of 200 demonstrators to stage a "funeral procession for life on Earth."
At the protest, Suzuki told a reporter: “There are gonna be pipelines blown up if leaders don’t address climate change.”
Extinction Rebellion says it "agrees with Dr. Suzuki," stressing that his statement is a prediction of what could happen as people become desperate.
"The statement by David Suzuki is a prediction of what is to come as the desperation of ordinary people increases while governments fail to address the climate and ecological emergency, and disasters and climate chaos destroy people’s lives," explains a news release.
The organization asserts that Suzuki's words are not controversial. Instead, it says the press is maliciously framing his comments as "condoning violence."
“Not only will pipelines be blown up, but we can be certain that world leaders will be put on trial for treason or worse - be killed," says Zain Haq, Extinction Rebellion Canada’s National Action & Strategy Coordinator. "Although Extinction Rebellion activists are nonviolent, we cannot control the actions of those outside of this movement who may commit acts of violence."
Haq adds: “The same goes for the media. When the Canadian public realizes that the press has been misleading them about how the climate emergency is being addressed, you can be sure that some people will become violent. We know this from history. People will not forgive extreme acts of criminality by their governments and the institutions they are supposed to trust."

I agree that conservatives are the true bad guys, peddling their fairy tale nonsense about man-made climate change being a farce. But we live in Canada where even the dumbest right wingers are free to publicize their stupidity, despite it embarrassing them every time they do so.The Green Barbarian wrote: ↑Nov 25th, 2021, 9:51 am In case you wanted to know who the true bad guys are in the whole man-made climate change farce, these are them.
It's that special time of year when conservatives stupidly act like they're not allowed to say Merry Christmas.

Re: Free speech in Canada.
Suzuki is now walking back his call to violence over fairy tales. I wonder what caused the change of heart, especially after the Extinction Rebellion psychos said that they supported him.
This is on Castanet.
^^^Prominent environmentalist David Suzuki is walking back comments he made to a B.C. news outlet suggesting government inaction on climate change would inevitably lead to violence.
After a protest on Nov. 20 in Victoria, CHEK News asked Suzuki what would happen if government leaders did not properly address the climate crisis.
“We’re in deep doo doo,” he said. “And the leading experts have been telling us for over 40 years. This is what we’ve come to. The next stage after this, there are going to be pipelines blown up if leaders don’t pay attention to what’s going on.”
In a written statement released Thursday, Suzuki said his remarks were “poorly chosen.”
“Any suggestion that violence is inevitable is wrong and will not lead us to a desperately needed solution to the climate crisis,” he said. “My words were spoken out of extreme frustration and I apologize.”
The apology comes amid heightened tensions over the construction of the $6-billion Coastal GasLink pipeline being built through northern B.C.

Re: Free speech in Canada.
There is nothing free in Canada any longer, speech or otherwise.
As I said in 2015 when this tyrant was elected - he would find a way to destroy our democracy, and with the help of his co-conspirators - he has successfully done that.
A country that supports Apartheid of any sort, and promotes discrimination to those who defend their rights is no longer free.
When an unelected beaurocrats can unilaterally enact mandates ( which are not laws by the way ), which causes government sanctioned assault on the people for whom they work for, that is a dictatorship - and NOT a free country.
When a government unilaterally strips you of your rights, guaranteed under the Canadian Charter of Rights, ( which is has already violated several ), you no longer live in a free and democratic society.
Free speech ( or freedom of expression ) does not exist. What exists is government sanctioned propaganda and government sanctioned misinformation - and suppression of debate. That is not indicative of a FREE country.
We sit here and judge China with Genocide, yet, we are just as guilty.
Aborting full term babies as they are being born, is infanticide and genocide - who is speaking for them?
Again - when you give up your freedom for a little safety, you will end up with neither freedom nor safety.
Once a government is successful at taking something from you, you will never get it back, and that is directly from Brian Peckford, one of the co-creators of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, which is now being used for toilet paper in the House of Commons and every Legislature and government office in Canada
Freedom is not automatic - sometimes you have to fight for it.
But don't wait too long or you will lose if forever.

...says the person expressing themselves freely. One of the great things about freedom is that it allows to proclaim the sky is falling every time something you don't support happens.csm wrote: ↑Dec 10th, 2021, 12:09 pm There is nothing free in Canada any longer, speech or otherwise.

Re: Free speech in Canada.
Imagine being so privileged that the most oppressed you've ever felt is by being offered a life-saving vaccine, for free, that was specifically designed to keep you and your family safe.

Re: Free speech in Canada.
Yeah! If you feel oppressed just remember we're all in this together and your stupid decisions don't get to influence my life.
Get the vaccine already, your free speech isn't censored, but your own stupidity is!
Dumb people who don't understand the scientific method are a disgrace and their opinions are meaningless on this topic.
Now don't threaten my family anymore with your inaction and claim to free speech violations, just do your freakin part.
