Robert named his new friend "Antis", and the dog became the Squadron's mascot. The airmen quickly noticed Antis' ability to hear enemy warplanes long before humans did. On many occasions, he barked and alerted the air base of an imminent attack, and on one occasion, he ignored his own injuries in order to rescue his human friends.
Shortly after Germany invaded France, Robert and Antis went to England to carry on fighting against the Nazis. Robert served with the Royal Air Force, and Antis followed him everywhere. The German shepherd even flew with Robert on 30 missions over enemy territory.
One day, the Wing Commander discovered that Antis flew on missions (which was strictly forbidden), so Robert began saying: "Sir, please let me explain....". His superior interrupted him and said: "There's a very good English expression that says: what the eye doesn't see, the heart doesn't grieve after". Robert and Antis both survived the war and remained best friends until Antis died in 1953. His gravestone says in Czech: "Loyal unto death".

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_A ... light_5390British Airways Flight 5390 was a flight from Birmingham Airport in England for Málaga Airport in Spain. On June 10, 1990, the BAC One-Eleven 528FL suffered explosive decompression resulting in no loss of life. With the aircraft flying over Didcot, Oxfordshire, an improperly installed windscreen panel separated from its frame, causing the plane's captain to be blown partially out of the aircraft. With the captain pinned against the window frame for twenty minutes, the first officer landed at Southampton Airport.

And that is why the pilot should always wear his seatbelt!
My Wife asked me if I knew what her favorite flower was?
Apparently "Robin Hood All Purpose" was the wrong answer!

During WWII, Jews in Budapest were brought to the edge of the Danube, ordered to remove their shoes, and shot, falling into the water below.
60 pairs of iron shoes now line the river's bank, a ghostly memorial to the victims. 'Shoes on the Danube Promenade' by Can Togay and Gyula Pauer.

Susie was barely in her early teens when her family fled to St. Simons Island, a Union controlled area in Georgia, during the Civil War. With her inquisitive eyes and kind demeanor and her education, she impressed the army officers. They asked that she become a teacher for children and even some adults. “I would gladly do so, if I could have some books,” she replied. And so she became the first black teacher of freed black students to work in a freely operating freedmen’s school in Georgia.
Not long after, Susie married, and joined her husband and his regiment as they traveled. She became their teacher, teaching the illiterate men to read and write. It was also during this time that she became a nurse to the men, thus making her the first black army nurse in the Civil War.
All this she accomplished before the age of 18.
Looking back on her time as a nurse, she said that “I gave my service willingly for four years and three months without receiving a dollar. I was glad…to care for the sick and afflicted comrades.”

https://www.battlefields.org/learn/arti ... trepreneurNot many people can know the considerable legacy of James Edward Hanger. Those who have lost a limb have been impacted by his work as a manufacturer and inventor in the field of prosthetics. James Hanger was born on February 25, 1843, in Churchville, Virginia, and had a typical Virginia childhood in rural Virginia. In 1860, enrolled as a student at Washington College (today’s Washington and Lee University) in Lexington, Virginia, when his life, like many other young men’s lives changed at the start of the Civil War. A bright engineering student, he left college enlisting in the Churchville Cavalry alongside two older brothers and four cousins. Soon after joining the army, he was placed on guard duty at a local farm near the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad in West Virginia. The very next day, the first organized land action of the war took place during the Battle of Philippi, a small skirmish in where Federal forces attacked the Confederate soldiers. Within twenty minutes, the unprepared Confederates quickly fled, leading the skirmish to be referred to as “The Philippi Races." Though the battle was small in number and over in minutes, it affected the rest of James Hanger’s life. Over the course of the battle Hanger suffered a serious injury when he was in a barn and a six-pound ball crashed in and hit Hanger’s left leg near the knee. It “passed through six thicknesses of two or two and a half oak plank stall partitions and partially penetrated the seventh. There its momentum was exhausted, and the ball fell in the stall.”

This is Jim Thorpe. Look closely at the photo, you can see that he's wearing different socks and shoes. This wasn't a fashion statement. It was the 1912 Olympics, and Jim, an American Indian from Oklahoma represented the U.S. in track and field. On the morning of his competitions, his shoes were stolen. Luckily, Jim ended up finding two shoes in a garbage can. That's the pair that he's wearing in the photo. But one of the shoes was too big, so he had to wear an extra sock. Wearing these shoes, Jim won two gold medals that day.
