Not sure about the masks, although I'm sure they helped somewhat.
I think the biggest thing was the social pressure to stay away when sick.
Used to be, the thought process of, go to work unless dead. You can tuff it out.
But then u passed it on to others...
Now it's stay home if sick.
Hard to believe that society needed to be reminded of personal cleanliness ie wash hands...lol

I agree, the biggest impact on virus spread was likely because more people stayed home when sick. Masks and distancing probably helped somewhat as well, because most viruses are contagious before you even know you have them, and that is one of the biggest reasons it is hard to stop the spread.
I can't help but think of the large amounts of healthcare workers off sick, and I believe they said only about 30% due to covid... so still many cold viruses circulating? Or uncounted flu cases? Or?

But others haven't been so lucky - some got covid before getting vacinated (some died, some didn't) and some people are still getting covid. It's very contagious.
