Shirley led a truly remarkable life. She survived a circus ship fire in Nova Scotia, an overturned transport trailer while traveling across the United States, and an altercation with another elephant that caused her a broken back leg. After spending 24 years in the circus and another 22 years as the sole elephant on exhibition at a zoo in Monroe, Louisiana, Shirley retired to The Elephant Sanctuary in 1999, where she was reunited with a former friend from the circus, Jenny. Shirley lived and thrived at The Sanctuary for 21 years, becoming the matriarch of the Asia Herd.

She demonstrated to us all that it is possible to trust, to heal, and to love again after enduring many decades of hardship. The Sanctuary family celebrates our memories of her wisdom, strength, and perseverance.

Dance as if no one's watching, sing as if no one's listening, and live everyday as if it were your last.

Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain.

Having breakfast in the hotel dining room and the waiter smiles and says "welcome back, it's been a long time".

Prior to that, checking in and the manager comes out from her office and says pretty well the same words.

So nice to have real, heartfelt recognition and service.

It had been two years since our last visit.

Absolutely, I agree!

That, and the little pup galumphing into the room, skidding to a halt beside me and clambering up into my lap <3

The ravens are back!

They're fun to watch! I remember the first time watching them and they were hopping around my yard staring at the ground.

"*bleep*?!"

One of them ripped like a 10" long worm out of the lawn and another saw it and and was all like "Hey are you gonna share that?" and the one that ripped it out of the ground was all sorts of "No it's mine!"

Had a long, tiring day today and at noon wife and I took our 8 year old grandson out for lunch.

While there I took him to the boys room.
He goes into a stall and starts talking to me. He's reading a phrase off the washroom wall.
Oh no. :smt045
Two other guys standing beside me turn and look at me, mouths open, then we burst out laughing.
Something about doing #1 and trying not to fart just in case. :200:

The stall door is open and he's just standing there, reading it again. Then he runs back and tells it to my wife, word for word.
And she stares at him, mouth open.

Little boys, gotta love em.
