Dance as if no one's watching, sing as if no one's listening, and live everyday as if it were your last.

Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain.

The photographs are of Eamon de Valera, Arthur Griffith who succeeded him as president and Michael Collins who became the Chairman of the Provisional Government of Ireland or the first prime minister.

At 9pm on 7th January 1922 modern Ireland came into existance with the ratification of the Anglo-Irish Treaty. The treaty did not establish an independent Ireland as many had hoped, especially the leader of Sinn Fein and President of the Dail (Irish parliament) Eamon de Valera. Instead Ireland was offered a commonwealth status similiar to Canada and Australia with the British monarch as its head of state. The new nation would be called the Irish Free State and the vote of ratification, 64 for, 57 against would cause the Sinn Fein party (and the country) to split and a bloody and vicious civil would ensue that would leave poisonous divisions in Irish politics and social life for generations to come.

Judy – The Hero Dog of WW2 Who Survived Ship Sinkings & Prison Camps.
One such dog was Judy, an English pointer, who earned the Dickin Medal for her heroism during WWII.

Judy was born in Shanghai in 1936, a time of great turmoil across the world. Japan would begin its invasion of China in just over a year, while in the West, Hitler’s Nazi Party, having been in power in Germany for four years, were rattling their sabers and preparing for war.

Little did the beautiful little white-and-liver puppy know that she would spend much of her life embroiled in the war that was about to sweep across the length and breadth of much of the known world.

Undoubtedly when some folks think of the discovery of penicillin, they may reflect on Alexander Fleming, the Scottish farmer who is credited with its discovery in 1928. But the story of the discovery of this seemingly magical antibiotic is controversial, and it appears Fleming isn’t the only one who had a hand in its discovery.

And this is sad because one young man who is at least partly responsible for penicillin’s discovery received no credit. Despite this seeming setback, Dr. Clodomiro Picado Twight, the Costa Rican scientist became one of the world’s foremost authorities on snake venom.

The good doctor, born in San Marcos, Nicaragua, to Clodomiro Picado Lara and Carlota Twight Umaña on April 17, 1887, pioneered the use of antivenin to save people bitten by Central America’s many venomous snakes. Over the course of his life, Dr. Picado wrote at least 115 research papers that delved into virtually everything that intrigued him: soil science, flora, fauna, human tissues, and, of all things, water. Books and monographs are also included in this impressive list and his work covered an astounding range of topics: bromeliads, zoology, botany, ophidism (snake bite), physiology, phytopathology, industrial microbiology, medical microbiology, and immunology.

While in Costa Rica, met the gardener who at one time worked in the coffee plantations there. He was bitten by a fer-de-lance and owed his life to the anti-venom administered to him on an emergency basis.

His right leg calf muscle and tissue had completely dissolved from the venom and is now nothing but skin surrounding the bone.

Yikes!
Sufficiently advanced incompetence is indistinguishable from malice. There’s a certain point at which ignorance becomes malice, at which there is simply no way to become THAT ignorant except deliberately and maliciously.

On this day, May 11, 1960, Otto Adolf Eichmann, was captured by Mossad agents in Argentina and subsequently found guilty of war crimes in a widepublicised trial in Jerusalem, following which he was executed by hanging in 1962.
