Biden calls for end to ‘hate-fueled domestic terrorism’ after Buffalo mass shooting

President Biden late Saturday called for an end to “hate-fueled domestic terrorism” after a gunman opened fire in a Buffalo, N.Y. supermarket hours earlier, killing 10 people.

Biden in a statement said acts of domestic terrorism are “antithetical” to U.S. values.

“Any act of domestic terrorism, including an act perpetrated in the name of a repugnant white nationalist ideology, is antithetical to everything we stand for in America. Hate must have no safe harbor,” Biden wrote. “We must do everything in our power to end hate-fueled domestic terrorism.”

Thirteen people were shot on Saturday when a gunman fired in a Tops Friendly Market in Buffalo. Ten people died and three others were injured but are expected to survive.

Eleven of the 13 people shot were Black. The incident is being investigated as a hate crime.

Erie County Sheriff John Garcia on Saturday called the shooting a “straight-up racially motivated hate crime.”

Police said the alleged gunman, 18-year-old Payton Gendron of Conklin, N.Y., who is white, drove hours to arrive at the Tops Friendly Market, which is located in a predominantly Black neighborhood. The shooter was wearing military gear and live streamed the incident on Twitch from a helmet camera.

Gendron was arraigned on Saturday night and charged with one count of first-degree murder.

Biden on Saturday said that while authorities are still searching for information on the motivations behind the attack, it is clear that hate crimes driven by race are “abhorrent to the fabric of this nation.”

“We still need to learn more about the motivation for today’s shooting as law enforcement does its work, but we don’t need anything else to state a clear moral truth: A racially motivated hate crime is abhorrent to the very fabric of this nation,” Biden wrote.

He called the shooting “horrific.”

“Tonight, we grieve for the families of ten people whose lives were senselessly taken and everyone who is suffering the physical and emotional wounds of this horrific shooting,” the president wrote.

Sen. Rick Scott doubles down on call for Biden to resign over inflation crisis: 'Get out of the way'
Scott responds to Biden criticism on the rate of inflation on 'Fox & Friends'

Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., reiterated Wednesday his stance that President Biden should resign as inflation continues to impact the economy. Scott joined "Fox & Friends" to torch Biden's economic policies, arguing the president seems "confused" when discussing the issues.

SEN. RICK SCOTT: Well, look at his accomplishments. It's the opposite. We're in horrible shape. He doesn't even know what state I'm from. And you said he was supposed to give his ideas on inflation yesterday. What were his ideas? Oh, it's everybody else's fault but his. So we know he can't do it. Let's be honest. We know that Joe Biden cannot fix this economy. Alright, get out of the way, let somebody else do it. That's what you do in business life. … He's confused about all these things. … Get people back to work. That's how this country was built.

If Sen. Rick Scott thinks Biden is the cause of inflation then he's an idiot that does not belong in politics. Inflation is world wide.

Joe Biden is a right wing guy now? I wish he would start acting like it, instead of making all of these insanely stupid decisions that only a lefty would make.

Biden offers logistics support to ease formula shortage

President Joe Biden is offering formula manufacturers and retailers transportation and logistics support to ease the nationwide shortage of baby formula, as the administration works to bring the largest domestic plant back on line after it was shut down early this year due to safety issues.

The White House said it is working with all major formula producers to boost production, including reaching out to their suppliers to encourage them to prioritize production and delivery of formula ingredients. It comes as the Biden administration has come under intense pressure over the last week to do more to ease the shortage of formula that has forced parents of infants to go to significant lengths to feed their children.

The shortage stems from a February recall by Abbott, the nation’s largest formula maker, that shuttered the company’s Michigan plant and exacerbated ongoing supply chain disruptions among formula makers, leaving fewer options on stores shelves across much of the country. The shortage has led retailers like CVS and Target to limit how many containers customers can purchase per visit and forced some parents to swap and sell formula online.

On Monday, FDA Commissioner Robert Califf told ABC News’ “Good Morning America” that the federal agency is “working really closely with Abbott” to reopen the closed Michigan factory and he expects that “in a very short period of time we’re going to have an announcement about the path forward.”

Califf said an announcement is forthcoming about importing baby formula from abroad, noting that the key is making sure the instructions for the formula are in languages that mothers and caregivers can understand.

The FDA warned families against making their own baby formula because it has 30 distinct constituents that have to be in the right amount, otherwise the formula can possibly be dangerous to consume.

Matt Stoller did a good write up on this. Not Bidens fault really and nothing he can do to fix it. More a case of "because markets" than anything else. I.e. baby food manufacturers are in the business of making money, not baby food.

President Joe Biden’s approval rating dipped to the lowest point of his presidency in May, a new poll shows, with deepening pessimism emerging among members of his own Democratic Party.

Only 39% of U.S. adults approve of Biden’s performance as president, according to the poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Research, dipping from already negative ratings a month earlier.

Overall, only about 2 in 10 adults say the U.S. is heading in the right direction or the economy is good, both down from about 3 in 10 a month earlier. Those drops were concentrated among Democrats, with just 33% within the president’s party saying the country is headed in the right direction, down from 49% in April.

Of particular concern for Biden ahead of the midterm elections, his approval among Democrats stands at 73%, a substantial drop since earlier in his presidency. In AP-NORC polls conducted in 2021, Biden’s approval rating among Democrats never dropped below 82%.

The findings reflect a widespread sense of exasperation in a country facing a cascade of challenges ranging from inflation, gun violence, and a sudden shortage of baby formula to a persistent pandemic.

“I don’t know how much worse it can get,” said Milan Ramsey, a 29-year-old high school counselor and Democrat in Santa Monica, California, who with her husband had to move into her parents’ house to raise their infant son.

Ramsey thinks the economic dysfunction that's led to her being unable to afford the place where she grew up isn't Biden's fault. But she's alarmed he hasn't implemented ambitious plans for fighting climate change or fixing health care.

“He hasn't delivered on any of the promises. I feel like the stimulus checks came out and that was the last win of his administration,” Ramsey said of Biden. “I think he's tired — and I don't blame him, I'd be tired too at his age with the career he's had.”

Republicans have not been warm to Biden for a while. Less than 1 in 10 approve of the president or his handling of the economy, but that's no different from last month.

"President Joe Biden finally did it. The lackluster leader’s approval rating has fallen below every president of the modern era at this stage of their term."

There must be a way they can blame this on everyone else. Maybe some historical event. Maybe extremist's claims, Science deniers. Someone must be to blame. Only common sense would point directly to the current government.
