They drained troops from that area to reinforce the Donbas and Crimean land bridge.
You know, the objectives of their operation.
Most western accounts say the area was thinly held and the Russians withdrew in good order.
Ukraine, bankrupt, must now help all the civilians in this devastated area for the upcoming winter, and defend it.
Theyve used up their operational reserve.
Hows the southern counteroffensive going btw?

Would the Russians rather have held that area? Sure, why not. Is this some epochal defeat? Nah.

As i mentioned above, look at mansteins counter offensive in 43 in, wait for it... Kharkov... how did it work out for Jerry? This 2022 version was pure americana, they love the ww2 wehrmacht btw, but i dont think they understand the russian way of war at all.

The whole nature of war has changed since the Afghanistan era. Global communications and interdependencies, drones and gps guided weapons down to howitzer shells use satellite coordinates, surveillance, and intelligence. There is no hiding and we get a play-by-play of all the action and see everything going on. The war was a stupid idea and the Russians underestimated Ukraine and the effectiveness of new technologies. The picture could have been quite different without foreign aid. Russia may even loose Crimea as high level occupiers are selling and leaving.
The US will continue to send arms until it is over.

They make 14,000 a month so thats about 5 years production just blew up.

Ukrainians fire 6,000 a day...

So now we are gonna build new factories to make more things to go boom.

For those keeping track of such things... Russia has fired a forth Kinzhal (hyper-sonic-ish) missile since the start of hostilities with Ukraine. This one reportedly injured 6 firefighters in *checks notes* Stavropol, Russia.
