Well if the US threatened Khadr, a Canadian citizen, while he was in custody in Gitmo, that would certainly be a good reason for Russia to invade Ukraine. Huh ???

Russia couldn’t leave Ukraine alone to choose Europe over them. Ukraine gets their freedom from Russia in the early 1990s after 300+ years of occupation.
Between Tsars and then the communist party murdering countless millions of Ukrainians in that time, some people just don’t understand the hatred Ukraine has for Russia.

As I said, it's not that simple. Russia already agreed to let them alone after the dissolution of the USSR, providing Ukraine wouldn't turn hostile, i.e. joining NATO. They agreed, and everything was nice, peaceful, and prosperous. Then, the Maidan coup came in 2014. This is when the new, openly Nazi and Russia-hating government took over. Not only that they aspired to join NATO shortly after, by also started terrorizing their own Russian-speaking population, and effectively engaged in ethnic cleansing on the state level. This is what led to what we are seeing today.
