Husband took pup out this morning, says there is frost on the ground in the back yard - but only in the shadow of the fence line.

Putting the garden away slowly. The decorative stuff under cover mostly. Weeds out. The last of the sunflower stalks with flowers lived for another day or two. Got lots of leeks still to let stay in.

Weeds I got weeds if you want 'em

Still picking blackberries and goji berries. A few grapes are left on the vine. I'm waiting for the frost to cause the dahlias to die back so I can pull them.

Picked raspberries today, contemplating various things.
Did a lot of clipping down, one of my compost bins needs to be sifted out already. Then that soil will sit for a Winter while I fill up the bin with more leaves and greens.

Now living in a condo and no garden like before but I am waiting for a Community Garden to come available next month. Here's hoping.

In the meantime I have planted some garlic cloves in a couple of containers on my balcony.
Question here is does the soil have to be kept moist until it freezes or can it dry out prior to freezing?

bb49, a little moisture will prevent drying out of the roots.
I did some freeze trials a few years ago on potted purple Thai garlic.
tough to kill those plants.
the offspring are still populating my garden.

Keep in mind that any moisture in the pots will turn to ice when it freezes, which may cause expansion and therefore destruction of the pots - I've had this happen a few times :/

That snow was unexpectedly heavy - for the very first time I had tree damage. A limb on my oak snapped - it's not a very big tree yet, I guess I will need to trim that today. I'm going by tree circumference, though. It's getting pretty tall now that I really look at it.

I saw lots of broken tree limbs today. As you know the Curly Willow next door crashed down limbs into my yard. Today they're all back over the fence for the owner to take away. And oddly, looks like certain flowers out there have: perked up! Ya. Odd.

I forgot to dig my dahlias

So, I was out last night around 5:30 with a headlamp, digging in the snow. I did get a bunch of them dug up and into a paper bag. Today I will dry them off, wrap them in paper towels and store in paper bags. Hoping they survive.

I did get them out before the hard freeze, so I'm thinking they ought to be okay.
