Lula da Silva will return to Brazil’s presidency in stunning comeback

Post by Tyrian-Quill »

    • Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has been elected the next president of Brazil, in a stunning comeback following a tight run-off race on Sunday. His victory heralds a political about-face for Latin America’s largest country, after four years of Jair Bolsonaro’s far-right administration.

The 76-year-old politician’s win represents the return of the left into power in Brazil, and concludes a triumphant personal comeback for Lula da Silva, after a series of corruption allegations lead to his imprisonment for 580 days. The sentences were later annulled by the Supreme Court, clearing his path to run for reelection.

“They tried to bury me alive and I’m here,” he said in a jubilant speech to supporters and journalists on Sunday evening, describing the win as his political “resurrection.”

“Starting on January 1, 2023, I will govern for the 215 million Brazilians, not just the ones who voted for me. There are not two Brazils. We are one country, one people, one great nation,” Lula da Silva also said.

He will take the reins of a country plagued by gross inequality that is still struggling to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic. Approximately 9.6 million people fell under the poverty line between 2019 and 2021, and literacy and school attendance rates have fallen. He will also be faced with a deeply fractured nation and urgent environmental issues, including rampant deforestation in the Amazon.

This will be his third term, after previously governing Brazil for two consecutive terms between 2003 and 2010.
I wish Lula da Silva and all Brazilians all the best.

I feel this thread should have been titled "Brazil sees the light, moves left"

Considering that 6 of 7 recent Latin America elections have gone left says a lot ... considering that Lula presided over 8 years of a boom in Brazil I hope that he can pull the country back together, maybe this time without questionable scandals ...

Congratulations Brazil for ousting the disgusting, far right extremist Bolsonaro! Bolsonaro's loss represents another example of far right, democracy-hating extremists losing power - Trump, Truss, and now Bolsonaro - voters kicking out far right extremists truly are making the world great again!

Brazil election: A moment in history as Lula returns

As news of Lula's victory spread, a sea of red - the colours of his Workers' Party - massed on São Paulo's main street, Paulista Avenue, eager for a glimpse of the president-elect.

"Lula has returned," the crowd chanted, as they let off red smoke in celebration.

"It was a very hard campaign," Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva admitted to the crowds a few hours later. "It wasn't Lula against Bolsonaro, it was a campaign of democracy against barbarity."

Like him or loathe him, the fact that Lula, once Brazil's most popular politician, is returning to the top job is a moment in history.

"I feel free, relieved not only for the Brazilian people but for the whole planet - for the Amazon, for democracy, for human rights," said 47-year-old Viridiana Aleixo, while admitting that Brazil remained very divided. "We have to be very patient, and we have to leave the anger and hatred behind."

Twenty years ago, Lula came to power promising huge change - but a subsequent fall from grace over corruption scandals disqualified him from running in 2018. He had a stint in prison, before his charges were annulled. It has been quite a journey for Lula, but he has returned with a vengeance.

Why? That's just idiotic to even think that.

Yes, it does. Latin America is truly screwed. Although it sounds like Chile isn't liking their experiment into communism and now want a refund.

Before screaming to the heavens about Brazil electing an old fart over a far right politician, you may want to research Lula. He's no saint.

While he did a lot if good for the citizens of Brazil, he did a lot of good for himself and his buddies.

His entire political life has been filled with corruption, scandals and controversy, vote buying, money laundering.

He spent 580 days in prison.

Yup, just the politician some like to give out these to

Brazil markets tumble on Lula's first full day in office

BRASILIA (Reuters) -Brazilian markets delivered a withering verdict on leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's first full day in office on Monday, after he pledged to prioritize social issues and ordered a budget-busting extension to a fuel tax exemption.

Lula's decision to extend the fuel tax exemption, which will deprive the Treasury of 52.9 billion reais ($9.9 billion) a year in fiscal income, was a stinging rebuke of his finance minister Fernando Haddad, a Workers Party (PT) loyalist who had said it would not be extended.

Haddad, who is seeking to dispel market fears that he might not maintain fiscal discipline, took office on Monday, pledging to control spending. "We are not here for adventures," he said.

    Markets seemed unconvinced.

The real currency lost 1.5% in value against the dollar in afternoon trading, while the benchmark Sao Paulo stock market index ended 3.06% down. Shares of state-run oil company Petrobras retreated nearly 6.45%.

In speeches delivered at his inauguration in Brasilia on Sunday, Lula promised that tackling hunger and poverty would be "the hallmark" of his third presidency after two previous stints running the country from 2003 to 2010.

Financial analysts said the start of Lula's third presidency was in line with his campaign promises, and looked similar to earlier Workers Party policies that led to a deep recession.

Lula narrowly defeated far-right incumbent Jair Bolsonaro in October, swinging South America's largest nation back on a left-wing track.

On Monday, Lula instructed ministers to revoke steps to privatize state companies taken by the previous administration, including studies to sell Petrobras, the Post Office and state broadcasting company EBC

Do any of the fools who support "democratic socialism" and the NDP think that anything would be different in Canada if we ever elected a massive dufus like Jagmeet in a coalition with the Green Party? This is why people who truly care about their countries keep extremists like this idiot Lula as far away from power as possible.
Brazil markets slump on Lula's first full day in office

It is left-wing President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s first full day in office and Brazilian markets are already reeling after his pledge to prioritize social issues and his ordering a budget-busting extension to a fuel tax exemption.

The decision on extending the fuel tax exemption, which will cost the Treasury USD 9.9 billion a year in fiscal income, came about despite Lula’s Finance Minister Fernando Haddad, a Workers Party (PT) loyalist, having claimed it would not be extended.

Being on a quest to ease market worries that he might not reign in fiscal spending, Haddad assumed office on Monday saying: “We are not here for adventures.”

But the markets seemed to know better and they jittered. The real currency BRBY depreciated by 1.5 percent against the dollar in afternoon trading, while the benchmark Sao Paulo stock market index BVSP slumped 3.24 percent. Shares of state-run oil company Petrobras PETR4.SA retreated almost 6 percent.

Lula’s inaugural speech in Brasilia on Sunday was laden with promises of dealing with hunger and undoing poverty – “the hallmark” of his third presidency after two previous terms from 2003 to 2010.

A tearful Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has vowed to haul Brazil out of Jair Bolsonaro’s era of “devastation” and kickstart a new phase of reconciliation, environmental preservation and social justice after being sworn in as president.

Fighting back tears as he addressed tens of thousands of supporters who had packed the plaza outside the presidential palace in Brasília, Lula declared the end of “one of the worst periods in Brazilian history” under the former far-right president.

“[It was] an era of darkness, uncertainty and great suffering … but this nightmare is over,” Lula said, vowing to reunite the bitterly divided South American country and govern not just for those who elected him in October’s historic election, but all 215 million Brazilians.

By doing what? Devastating his economy and causing mass suffering of the Brazilian people? Really? How stupid are those who still think that these idiot Leftists do anything but destroy economies? How much evidence do you need? Lula is a loser. A complete scumbag.

Criticism of Lula’s economic plans mounts as Brazil markets tank
Analysts and a leading newspaper have slammed ministers after local markets tanked in Lula’s first two days in office.

Criticism of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s economic policies grew on Wednesday, with analysts and a leading newspaper slamming ministers after local markets tanked in the leftist’s first two days in office.

Finance Minister Fernando Haddad, a Lula loyalist who ran a failed presidential bid as the leftist Workers’ Party candidate in 2018, has been among the main targets, with his hometown newspaper O Estado de S Paulo dubbing him a “decorative minister” on Wednesday.

Haddad, a former mayor of Sao Paulo, took office vowing to restore public accounts and with the challenge of presenting a credible fiscal framework after Congress passed a giant Lula social spending package.

Lula has said erasing poverty and hunger will be the “hallmarks” of his government, leading to fears of rampant spending and scant fiscal discipline.

Markets reacted badly to Haddad’s first days in office, especially after Lula ordered a budget-busting extension to a fuel tax exemption that Haddad had publicly opposed.

“Haddad learned on his first day in office that he will be a decorative figure, a sort of task worker for President Lula,” the conservative daily said in an editorial.
