Hard Drive shopping (again)

Post by DataCruncher »

Looking for some expert opinions on internal HDD.
Have had long term successes with WD, HGST and Seagate products, but always concerned I don't keep enough backups.

Have been looking over the IronWolf Pro by Seagate.

I'm not an expert but do help people with their computers. I recommend Solid State Drives (SSD). I've used SanDisk and WD Blue for both laptops and desktops over the last few years with no problems. SSD's are much faster of course.

 for SSDs. I just replaced my laptops with a 1TB SSD and have a 2TB SSD portable as backup. Don't think I'll ever go back to old school magnetic drives.

Agree with SSD, however capacity vs. dollars puts me out of the ballpark.
I need big, reliable and cost effective.
What I'm seeing is the IronWolf is offering 5yr warranty and includes a 3yr data recovery.
Not many offer that, and usually only come with standard 1yr warranty.

Also looked at the LaCie d2 Professional USB-C 20TB, though pricey at $794.65. Same 5/3 as the IronWolf.
Same internal drive? :135:

Been price shopping and NewEgg so far is coming in with the lowest price + free shipping.

Can't go wrong with the Seagate considering the 20TB of storage. It is a good drive, although not as fast as a solid state drive. Pros and Cons to each. What do you need? Cheap storage, or lightning speeds?

Hmm, can't have the best of both worlds.
Am more interested in reliable storage capacity at this stage, speed being secondary as I can wait the few extra seconds/minutes for read/write.

Looked at the SSDs, but they are just so expensive still for large capacity.
Seagate IronWolf 125 SSD 4TB NAS @ $1,055.90

As I mentioned at some point that I had multiple backups, I'll be keeping those, however, want to have the 20tb drive so that I also have everything consolidated on a single drive instead of having to attach separate drives when seeking something.

Presently using a 12 and 2x 10TB for weekly bkps. Then they go off-line.
The balance are combinations of 8/6/4tbs which are always live.

Yup, the same amount of storage in a SSD would be pricey.
Go for the Seagate. It is a good PRO dependable drive.

2021 looked a bit bleak - because the wife made me buy from Costco that year.
