Billions in damage and 100s dead. Yikes. Terrible for so many families.

Another major quake

They have also been hit by numerous aftershock quakes, it’s been rather nasty in this region in last 24+ hours.

I am afraid, this one is going to be really bad. Not only because of the magnitude, but also because of the time it hit, when most people were asleep. Not sure if buildings in that part of the world are built to any seismic codes either.

I travelled two weeks in Turkey, all the way to the Iranian border. I assure you, maybe there are standards in Ankara or Istanbul, but East of Ankara was a Wild West of building and from what I saw overall, "no."

From counting GordonH's posts, that's three quakes at 6.0 and above and dozens of aftershocks by now. Not too long ago Turkey lost 47,000 people in one quake. This is Turkey and Syria together with no end in sight.

You have to wonder if the Saudi's are going to assist their own, or just build another gold palace.

The time of day is just awful. 3 in the morning. The infrastructure is not built to withstand earthquakes like that in Turkey so a lot of collapsed buildings.

My father-in-law was delivering papers after school in 1964 when a magnitude 9.2 struck where he lived in Alaska. The 2nd largest earthquake ever recorded on earth. The ground shook for 4 to 5 minutes. Only 9 died from the earthquake itself, but 122 died from the tsunamis. Yes, multiple tsnunamis since landslides created additional ones besides those from the quake itself. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1964_Alaska_earthquake

Over 3,600 killed so far. And it's just a mere few hours after the quake.
