We should start building prisons somewhere in high Arctic. And they don't need to be anything fancy. Just basic camps, and let inmates be guarded by the elements and polar bears.

And ship every one of these nuts there. Only then, the crime will subside.

Put some camp trailers in the bush, a couple hundred kms up an old logging road north of McKenzie.
Once a week supplies come in, no reason for fences.
But oh, I can already hear the offended screaming.

I disagree with your first sentence. There's not much rehab going on in our prisons other than fine tuning their criminal skills.

That is folklore that is generaterated by TV shows/movies and has no subtantial basis worthy of providing evidence, otherwise, proof would have been offered without a challenge to provide it.

Have you followed the healing lodge program. Laugh if one wishes, it seems to have less repeat offenders then the old school lock em up. I have family who worked on the program.

I feel something needs to change. A guy down the street from me is 56 years old, incarcerated and I can't tell you how many years of his life he has spent inside. Very sad, although he is a drug street criminal, and not so bright. He works in Kelowna.

Canadian penal systems are "based" on monetary penalties and removal of the liberty of movement in society.
There are no other punitive actions, no stocks in the town square, no public floggings or stonings.
