My gut feeling is all the uncertainty could have been avoided. I'm sure "they" know exactly what it was and where it was in terms of altitude.

A complete aside, but in terms how "uncertain" our atmosphere can be, and to give the casual observer an idea of how it is talked about it in very general terms, yesterday the tropopause folded over Mt Washington, New Hampshire. At a mere 5000 ft it was in the stratosphere for a brief period of time.

My guess...It was launched out of a sub within 200nm of the coast. Probably got close intel on how well hardened the 150 icbm silos at Malmstrom are. Gotta know if the CEP on your reentry vehicles is going to work or not.

Apparently last two objects that have been shot down including this one in the afternoon today were not balloons.

Speculating that the mysterious object on Friday morning has anything to do with what is going on...

That, is the alleged launch site of these balloons, there's a huge gap in the data over China, but it looks like this.



I'm still trying to find a better image and I'm looking at the backtrack over the last few days. Sure would be nice if something NORAD would ping for a minute or two up in the Yukon, but nothing over the Yukon, or Alaska.
