The start of WWII, Soviets and Nazi's marching together after they took Poland.

Like I said, it's a day to celebrate the fact that Hitler turned out to be a slightly bigger scumbag than Stalin.

I'm in favour of Russians going back to Russia. If it happens in a black plastic bag - that's on them. I'm sure they know their way back. What's a celebration without music? Happy Victory Day Tankies...

Strategically both countries (Rus/Ger) knew they could take each other out so it was in their best interest to sign pact. Nazi's went extra crazy invaded Russia and Russia feared it and was buying time and overnight Russia and the US signed a lend lease - same lend-lease they gave to Ukraine - and Russia was fighting for their lives.

Russia knows how fast things can change from "NATO has no plans" to something else and good luck telling them otherwise. Of all countries on this planet Russia has every reason to be paranoid. They have been invaded so many times because their territory offers no real geographical borders. This is the reason that controlling the Ukraine gap is so damn important to Russia and why they are willing to die to prevent NATO from getting in there. That ground is soaked in 500 years of blood.

UKraine was not minding their own business and Russia invaded. The US/NATO took over Ukraine and moved weapons in there and started training up troops. Russia is stopping the takeover. All they want is neutral not hostile Ukraine. This war is about Ukraines right to be hostile against Russia. Russia said no. Here we are in Canada saying "yay" :135:

We should all reflect on all the millions of people who have died in various wars. My position is and always has been one of peace not war. NATO has no business moving in and taking over the world by force. I oppose NATO whether Russia invades or not. It can be said that Russia is attacking it it can be said that Russia is defending. NATO expansion last 25 years paints the picture.

Kremlin was attacked, don't think that didnt drive the point home and things are very serious now.

Hopefully they come to terms. Jets are buzzing around there are close calls everyone is on high alert and there is little to no communication between Moscow and The White House. Things can get real very fast and everyone is playing dumb or worse throwing matches on the gas pile. Pray for the planet.

That started WWII. Stop, don't reply. Think about it, let it sink in overnight. Honestly, I get a little uncomfortable watching you twiddle things around in public to get to the point where you're proclaiming one of the two countries that started WWII, somehow saved my grandfather. No, that's not how it went down.

And if you get that by attacking them good luck.
russia does not have the right to tell any other country how to act. If they were to negotiate their way thru this mess they might get somewhere. russia has no chance to win this and the longer they play this game it just increase's the damage to the russian people and that will bring him down.

I'm curious what you think peace in Ukraine would look like, after over a year of Russia moving in tanks and bombing civilians in their homes, as they flee, bombing their hospitals, killing them in their own streets as they cycle out to get groceries?
Easy to say "I'm in favor of peace", but how would that be accomplished? Would Russians withdraw from ukraine and stop attacking them if they had a chance to do it?

"Demilitarization and denazification" they've only said it about 10 million times. Therein lies the problem, nobody in the West listens.

So... a neutral, unarmed Ukraine with a government favourable or amiable to Russia. Sort of like the Canada/US arrangement.

Did anyone watch the parade? As far as tanks go, it was a pretty impressive showing with 1 T-34 (1930's) and a battalion of ultra modern T-14's. Unfortunately, the 500 T-14's were using the ultra modern cloaking technology and you couldn't actually see them, but they were there.

Yup. And minus a whole bunch of territories, and not surprised if a land corridor to Moldova landlocking the country.

The Russians don't seem to be winning the hearts and minds of Ukrainians by bombing the hell out of them. Relations between Canada and the u.s. seem much different. Perhaps a different approach might work better for Russia.

What a disparaging remark :D I thought the t-34's were 1940's vintage...

They were impressive tanks 80 years ago, got to see one up close at the Bovington Tank museum.

I understand the Russians have sent a few T-14's close to the front but are used to shoot at Ukrainian houses and buildings only.
With the record of captured Russian tanks to date, they can't afford to lose one and then see it on a flat deck in the US.

I'm sure the west has listened as has Ukraine, however with the Russian track record of saying one thing and doing another as well as a corrupt autocratic government currently in the Kremlin, I strongly suspect the Ukrainian population would rather not go that direction, hence fighting back against an invading army.

That won't happen, the people of Ukraine voted for a western centric government.
Sort of like the Canada/US arrangement.
The only thing similar with Canada and the US is Ukraine and Russia share a long border. That's about it today.

There is a stalemate in Eastern Ukraine at the moment and neither side will be making any significant gains in the near future.
Russia clearing out towns around Zaporizhzia is a bit of a worry. Apparently the Russians are capable of just about anything.

Yep, generally called a 1940's vintage, but designed in the 1930's and the Kharkiv Diesel Factory, (Ukraine) started pumping them out in January of 1940. Of course, production was moved to the Stalin Ural Tank factory as the war progressed, in the great Russian tradition of copying everything and calling it Russia. (I just read an article about it on Yandex and saw a video on RuTube)

For anyone that misses the typical showing of Russian tanks at the Victory Day parade, I've found a nice photo album that you can pursue for the sake of nostalgia. https://www.oryxspioenkop.com/2022/02/a ... pment.html
