Do you really think companies would just leave the 9th largest country by GDP because we didn't just give them free money? When a child acts like a brat and threatens to leave do you beg them to say and raise their allowance?Babba_not_Gump wrote: ↑Jul 14th, 2023, 1:56 pmI would like to agree with you but if all Canadian companies who receive subsidies were suddenly cut off, most would shut down and leave Canada. Saw this today on the home page, it's about time too. I am so sick of the government giving these companies my tax dollars. We are not a socialist country, nothing is free!
And it applies to more then just those in the oil and gas industries.
The problem comes with other governments doing the same, subsidizing their own companies.

Re: Canada to end domestic subsidies for unabated fossil-fuel production
I find it so weird that you would blame any level of government for a private company raising their prices! Why are you not shaking your fist at Chevron, OPEC, or Shell? I'm mad as heck at them! There's no reason they should get MY tax dollars and then turn around and screw me at the pump as well!Urban Cowboy wrote: ↑Jul 14th, 2023, 2:06 pmHow exactly will this free market correct itself, when big oil are all colluding with each other?Fastandfurious74 wrote: ↑Jul 14th, 2023, 12:17 pm
Personally, if a company cant operate without handouts from the government, they shouldn't be in business at all. The free market will correct itself, if a company increases their prices to much, another will lower/keep theirs stable to steal their customers.
This "correction" is another way of saying, higher prices at the pump.
Government is feeling the pain, from JT's unchecked spending spree, so is now out to clawback funds from anywhere they can, and as always, in the end it's us footing the bill.

I completely understand where you're coming from, but my point is that, though you may feel that they are no longer getting your tax dollars, they will simply tack whatever this loss costs them, onto the price at the pump.Fastandfurious74 wrote: ↑Jul 14th, 2023, 3:28 pmI find it so weird that you would blame any level of government for a private company raising their prices! We lose either way is what I'm saying.
The only one that wins here is the feds, because they are no longer losing money to subsidies.
Never mind that, the more fuel costs at the pump, the happier government is, since they take in more money.
Great for them, sucks for us.

They would either leave or jack up their prices to local consumers.Fastandfurious74 wrote: ↑Jul 14th, 2023, 3:26 pmDo you really think companies would just leave the 9th largest country by GDP because we didn't just give them free money? They definitely would not be able to compete outside of Canada.
I don't like subsidies either, to any industry, but in able to compete they require a somewhat level playing field.

Oil is a global commodity.
NA companies, in isolation, are price takers not price makers.
Error that most people want to believe because they dislike high oil prices.

You make great points and thanks for replying to me! But isn't this just proof that the oil companies are gangsters, and we should be moving away from oil and gas? If they're going to bend us over a barrel (of oil) then why not increase our reliance on better alternatives? Greener energy, public transit, making cities that make sense for pedestrians and other modes of transport!Urban Cowboy wrote: ↑Jul 14th, 2023, 3:46 pmI completely understand where you're coming from, but my point is that, though you may feel that they are no longer getting your tax dollars, they will simply tack whatever this loss costs them, onto the price at the pump.Fastandfurious74 wrote: ↑Jul 14th, 2023, 3:28 pm

I for one am fed up with the Liberal $cience of past eight years.
Will be donating heavily to Conservatives as business improves. Once Conservatives are back in power, those donations will go to charities.

This, when we have plenty of oil, right here in North America.
Even here in NA they play games, like when some refinery gets temporarily shut down for "maintenance", in Louisiana, then the next day, prices at our pumps shoot up, because suddenly there's an oil shortage.
As if we don't have the ability to plan for short outages.
I detest high oil prices, and petroleum companies equally.

What are these "subsidies"? No one seems to know and they are never defined.Fastandfurious74 wrote: ↑Jul 14th, 2023, 12:07 pm https://www.castanet.net/news/Canada/43 ... ion#436820

Global commodity.
Nobody controls it.
OPEC can influence pricing when they seek to intervene.
Their goal is to stabilize pricing.
Price stabilization is to ensure there is incentive to develop future supply.
Consumers complaining about price are much like diabetics who complain about the cost of insulin.

Check back in at $150 oil, you can thank policies like this one for helping create $3/L gasoline in Canada.

The funny thing is, there are no subsidies for oil & gas unless you count the CEWS billions that Trudeau threw at anyone with their hand up.

Since when is "influencing pricing" not a form of control?raft-cove wrote: ↑Jul 14th, 2023, 7:15 pmMore Canadian consumers with their head in the sand.Urban Cowboy wrote: ↑Jul 14th, 2023, 5:36 pm

Did I miss that marketing class?

Whenever they decide, they want to build another tower in the desert, they monkey around with oil output, to force the price up.
If that's not the very definition, of control, I don't know what is.
If it walks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it's still a duck, no matter what name it's given.

Simple stuff.
Control vs influence.
