I am using Castanet as a media example-fluffy wrote: ↑Aug 22nd, 2023, 8:26 amJust because a site posts their own content "for free" doesn't mean they're not making money off of it. Advertising revenue is considerable in the form of banner ads, and user tracking information can be sold. The tech giants are not being told they can't post somebody else's content, just that they have to pay for it when they're reposting a product somebody else has paid to produce.CountryAtHeart wrote: ↑Aug 22nd, 2023, 7:36 am I shared news stories with friends, instead of using Facebook, it was suggested to use email, how is that not a copyright issue as you suggest it is.
If anyone can get an article for free, how is linking the article on Facebook to your friends on Facebook a copyright/compensation issue?
Business is business, and quite obviously the tech giants just don't want to pay, regardless of what they are saying in public releases.

How much is the free advertising worth if I post a Castanet article with a link to my 100 friends and family? How much is it worth if let’s say, 20 of them share that Castanet article and link to their 100 friends? And so on… Should Facebook charge companies for that advertisement? After all, business is business.

Ditto. Facebook is the worlds largest time waster and hackers delight. They say they have three billion users, but I am sure those include a lot of dormant and duplicate accounts. Mind you, if all Canadians quit, 3 billion - 40 million is still practically 3 billion. lol.
If anything, young users are leaving Facebook. Facebook may not have a bright future.

Ban Facebook? Why the hell would you want to go that far?
Banning a media site is right out of dictatorships? China, North Korea. They ban sites they don't like.
How about you not using it and let those that want to use it have their fun.
A few weeks ago there was a lot of criticism of Castanet. Should it have been banned?
Come on people, that's not the solution.

That's a good question. I think it's all based on a million pennies, but it adds up.
I think the point is that penny should be shared.
Castanet, CTV, Rebel, it doesn't matter.
Facebook takes it all, and doesn't pay any tax on top of it.
Whatever your news source is, share the wealth = longevity.
Interesting how people defend Facelessbook, the beast that sells all your info to anyone anywhere in the world, with no scruples at all.
The same pig that allows porn, scams, and who knows whatever else they can conger up, to the first penny that gets dropped in their lap.
People are p**sed they can't screw their favourite news source for a little convenience?!

I agree, there must be a ton of duplicate accounts. Or Zuck is just lying outright.
That's a bad sign if it's true. Half the planet on one site. One source.
And a poor source at that.
I'll have no problem staying away for 2 days.
I'll pitch in and go for 3.

I like Facebook and I also enjoyed the algorithm that placed news articles into my newsfeed . The best part was the never ending stream of comments following an article regarding the endless liberal failures. We can all see now why bill c18 was enacted . Can’t have Canadians seeing the bumbling and fumbling now can we ? We especially can’t be allowed to comment lest a liberal be offended . Sunny ways indeed!

LOL, can you imagine Trudeau rescinding this Bill as he screwed up. He would never do that. He is such a idiot.GordonH wrote: ↑Aug 21st, 2023, 7:06 pmPoliticians absolutely hate to admit they screwed up, they would rather swallow broken glass.moarcowbell wrote: ↑Aug 21st, 2023, 3:51 pm The answer to the issue is simple. Re: What's the big deal about the Facebook banning Canadian news?
The biggest problem I have with FB isnt the blocking of news, but rather all the ads I see while scrolling on it trying to see what my family has been up to. Its to the point where there are more ads than actual ppl posting on it. And a lot of these ads are scams.Jlabute wrote: ↑Aug 22nd, 2023, 10:49 amDitto. I was reading somewhere that in 10 years there will be more deceased ppl profiles on FB than alive ones. It is a dying page that we millennials helped build and its only us that is keeping it alive now.

That’s 1 of the ways fb makes their money by selling ads.Nedroj wrote: ↑Aug 23rd, 2023, 7:46 amThe biggest problem I have with FB isnt the blocking of news, but rather all the ads I see while scrolling on it trying to see what my family has been up to. How much money (taxpayers money) does the Trudeau pay Canadian semi media outlets to promote only liberals messages?
And some folks are mad at Facebook.
It is amazing how passionate some can be when they feel more than they think.

Also bury things like what’s up with that nondisclosure agreement while teaching in Point Grey.
