It's both. As per the post only 5 posts above where you jumped into the discussion...JLives wrote: ↑Sep 2nd, 2023, 10:31 amWell that's not Facebook. It's Google.Rejigger wrote: ↑Sep 2nd, 2023, 10:27 am
So you don't believe this statement?...
"We already pay to support Canadian journalism through our programs and partnerships - and we’ve been clear we’re prepared to do more. As part of our Google News Showcase program, we have negotiated agreements covering over 150 news publications across Canada. Last year alone, we linked to Canadian news publications more than 3.6 billion times — at no charge — helping publishers make money through ads and new subscriptions. This referral traffic from links has been valued at $250 million CAD annually. "

"The Government of Canada has enacted a new law called Bill C-18 (the Online News Act), requiring two companies to pay for simply showing links to news, something that everyone else does for free."

FB is an egomaniacal driven platform for people to project their best fake lives or whine incessantly of how much of a victim they are.
Why would any intelligent, free thinking person go to a platform such as FB to get news?
Go to the news sites.
Yes they may charge you. They have people to pay, as well as other operational costs.
Broaden your minds and read news from a variety of sources, not just the ones that favour your own ideology.
Reading news from sources that don't follow my own ideology (Fox being one example for me), reminds me of how a very large percentage of our Southern neighbours think and live their lives.
Doesn't mean I like or agree with what I read, but awareness is important.

Maybe some are missing the bullseye in this story.
When a corrupt govt messes with what you are ‘allowed’ to read, it then controls the message it wants its citizenry to read, thereby controlling your thought processes as there’s no alternative sources. This is what this pus-filled carbuncle of a govt is aiming for. (Thanks Moracowbell for this apt description of the hateful govt we are stuck with for now).
Marshall McLuhan said the same in other words but I suspect he never thought for a moment that the Canadian govt would be the perpetrator. None of us did, until recently.

Re: What's the big deal about the Facebook banning Canadian news?
Since I have never used fb or any other social media (besides this Forum).
So this News being blocked is just links from around the world, fb doesn’t actually have a News team of their own.

^^^^ precisely! The light bulbs are flickering now.
They only carry links back to the sources of the stories. This should make original sources very happy for the increased readership.
But that’s not good enough for Putz&Co, wanting FB to pay the original sources for the news items linked back to them
It’s a ponzi scheme. No doubt the payments must first cross the palms of greasy Libs, first. The cash can then be skimmed at will, just watch and wait.
Eta. It’s a cash grab, first and foremost perpetrated by a corrupt govt under the guise of “protecting and paying for” news items originally posted by the news sources.
This isn’t just wrong, it is corrupt. Whether you use FB or not (I don’t either) it is another case of our rotten and corrupt govt over-reaching their authority.

Re: What's the big deal about the Facebook banning Canadian news?
Alot of ignorance around this subject being displayed. In a nutshell, websites get paid by the click and FB is eating up all the clicks/revenue even though they're using other website's content. This can only last so long, at some point the legitimate content and news organizations can't afford to pay for their reporters and their costly investigations. Without a viable 5th estate we're liable to see only misinformation providers dominate since they're usually funded by corrupt organizations or political leaders. We all know, or at least should by now, that this is a direct threat to democracy and is bad for everyone. The only reason Canada is taking them on is that JT isn't owned by FB like the majority of American politicians. I'm proud that Canada is one of the first countries to take on one of these media giants.

Agreed. The CBC is a direct threat to democracy, as they are funded by a corrupt political leader.Steve Bob wrote: ↑Sep 3rd, 2023, 9:31 am Without a viable 5th estate we're liable to see only misinformation providers dominate since they're usually funded by corrupt organizations or political leaders. Thanks, Jolly, for finding common ground on that major issue.

So you’re good with censorship and only news from” trusted “ news sources . Shebeeshe and Canadian press are sure to set the record straight and only provide factual newsworthy articles without any bias , slant, or lies . …….RIGHT?

So when the Sports segment comes on the News does that network pay Sportsnet, TSN or ESPN or just get their permission to use it on their network.Catsumi wrote: ↑Sep 2nd, 2023, 8:26 pm^^^^ precisely! The light bulbs are flickering now.

Look, I realize that having a functioning BS detector may be in short supply but those of us with them can watch anything we want and know the facts, context and nuances of the subjects they're discussing. I realize that's alien to you and have chosen to exclude the main stream media as a resource. I hope you realize though, that by admitting you self isolate from anything outside your bubble, you're also admitting that you only see half the picture.George Orwell 1984 wrote: ↑Sep 3rd, 2023, 9:53 am Steve Bob

Ever wonder what rabbit hole you've climbed down when you start cheering against your Prime Minister, regardless of who's party he's from, and for a media monopoly?Gone_Fishin wrote: ↑Sep 3rd, 2023, 9:52 am

If the prime minister (I refuse to capitalize it in the current leadership crisis) is taking the country into an autocratic, corrupt, communist rabbit hole, I'll cheer against him/her as loudly as I can.Steve Bob wrote: ↑Sep 3rd, 2023, 11:30 amEver wonder what rabbit hole you've climbed down when you start cheering against your Prime Minister, regardless of who's party he's from, and for a media monopoly?Gone_Fishin wrote: ↑Sep 3rd, 2023, 9:52 am

I know you're on a small island of comrades, Jolly, the very few remaining of Justin's cheerleaders. That must be very lonely these days.
I'm looking forward to leadership that reverses the censorship Trudeau has foisted on Canadians. This was a huge miscalculation by the Liberals, thinking that their censorship would show them in a more favourable light. They grossly misjudged the intelligence of Canadians, and they're covered in the *bleep* that hit the fan over this debacle. The polls of public opinion show I'm bang on with this assessment.
