Good. Social media and news should be separate. The algorithms show you what they see a pattern of, that you want to see. For many who use social media as their news source that's not a good thing. No caveats on views in that statement, I mean everyone. And it undermines journalists who are trying to do their jobs. Not reporters who just read the news, journalists who seek it out. We should be going to the source.
I got a lot more variety of news when I was seeing it on Facebook because I was seeing what others were posting. Liberal, conservative and everything in between. Now I only see what I actually seek out. I don’t sit on my search engine all day and search out all the different viewpoints on a topic.
What do you mean go to the source? What is the difference if someone posts a eg. castanet story on facebook or if I go to the castanet app and look at it there. It’s exactly the same. How does it undermine journalists trying to do their jobs when their stories are posted? Especially if they post it?

Good post. Irrefutable logic.

First of all, there are actually some news sources that are unbiased and report facts without opinion. This notion that everything is either left or right leaning is projection because your folk have decided to voluntarily isolate yourself from anything that doesn't confirm your bias. Fact is there are regulations that hold most news sources to task, something your news sources on facebook are unencumbered by.CountryAtHeart wrote: ↑Sep 20th, 2023, 8:18 amAnd you don’t think people go to the sites that they agree with? Secondly, if you understood how content providers make money and how facebook take the lions share of that despite not providing content, then you'd understand how it undermines journalism.
But something tells me that facebook isn't providing THAT content to you.

Re: What's the big deal about the Facebook banning Canadian news?
Is it though? One is a social media company feeding you things and the other is a personal active choice. I never got my news from Facebook even when seeing it in my feed. But I've always been a news junkie and go right to the source. I realize everyone is different in their news habits. I want journalists to be paid for the content Facebook is making money on for free but it might be better for society to just keep it separate.Gone_Fishin wrote: ↑Sep 21st, 2023, 6:47 amCountryAtHeart wrote: ↑Sep 20th, 2023, 8:18 am

The situation is being manipulated by uninformed people claiming news is being censored. It isn't.
Clicking a screen a couple more times to directly visit a news site isn't a big deal imo. Facebook is slow anyway and full of lots of fake info.

Exactly.
I don't give a damn whether people/posters like me or dislike me, I'm not on earth to win any popularity contests.

Sufficiently advanced incompetence is indistinguishable from malice. There’s a certain point at which ignorance becomes malice, at which there is simply no way to become THAT ignorant except deliberately and maliciously.
