Gardens 2024: Flowers/Vegetables/Bushes/Trees
What new plants or methods of planting do you aspire to in 2024?
Mine is arches and lots of them. Plus hiding the neighbours via tall plantings.
What's yours?
And no, we should no be seeing growth in our gardens on January 1/24, what is most bizarre thing happening in your garden today? Mine is a pansy plant that just won't quit blooming since October. Weird.

Re: Gardens 2024: Flowers/Vegetables/Bushes/Trees
I was given seeds at Christmas (my coworker knows me well) for a heat-tolerant green that can be used as spinach. I want to see how it does, and try a bunch of new seeds. Grow sweet peppers in pots instead of in my garden plot.
My goal this year is to preserve more food, and eat more from the garden and less from the store.
Also, I need to pull my garlic at the right time. My 2023 crop was not great. I have maybe another couple of weeks' worth of garlic left.
I'm hoping the mulberry I've been nursing along survives well and can be transplanted to my inlaws this year.

That’s a good goal to have. I love summer eating and especially driving past grocery stores rather than stopping there to reload fridge.
During winter I make coleslaw, avoiding stupid, silly high prices for lettuce. However, those bowling balls that pass for cabbage…never again will I buy those. Tougher than shoe leather vs the crisp, crunchy oriental varieties. Cost more, but well worth it.

Sufficiently advanced incompetence is indistinguishable from malice. There’s a certain point at which ignorance becomes malice, at which there is simply no way to become THAT ignorant except deliberately and maliciously.

We can call cabbages oriental. We can call people cabbages but we can't call people oriental.
What a strange world we live in.

I should not be having bulbs pushing up out of the ground but I do.

^^^ -17C coming should put an end to that!
I've got darn aphids on my orange trees in the greenhouse!
Luckily they don't cause permanent damage to the trees apart from some new leaf curl, but still not an easy task washing them off now because the greenhouse is crammed full of plants. The ladybugs I collected in October didn't help at all!

Are you 100% sure they were “ladies”? If not, they may have been slutty little harlots that dropped your greenhouse like a stone for the neighbour’s green pastures.DANSPEED wrote: ↑Jan 7th, 2024, 3:32 pm ^^^ -17C coming should put an end to that!

I'm glad for the snow out there, it will insulate things nicely.

We'll need more snow for insulation though. More. Snow.

Don't know about Kelowna but here it is +3C and what snow we had (5cms?) is now down to 2 cms.
Snowing on the west side of the lake though.

I was out for a walk this evening at -20C and I could hear fruit trees cracking in orchards! Not a good sign!

Very bad sign. The whole thing is bad. Minus 30 in Calgary and minus 20 here.

I can't open my greenhouse door! It's welded shut! I have the oil heater set on low so around 45F but that was before the temp dropped to -23C in the daytime. ... I guess I shouldn't complain, old-timers said Okanagan lake used to freeze and you could walk across it! That must have been cold!

Is anything in the Greenhouse set to die now?
Right? And now all it's getting is "Sea Smoke" geez. I saw a light flitter of snow come down, stop and for a moment there I thought it would sock in with snow again, but no.

Re: Gardens 2024: Flowers/Vegetables/Bushes/Trees
I just caught it at 2C! I had to remove the door hinge pins to get the door off. Turns out the door latch was frozen. Watering can had a thin layer of ice on top. There's nothing in the greenhouse that can't take a light frost apart from maybe the budding orchid and fuchsia which is blooming. Orange trees can handle -6C. ... I just hope we don't lose the peach buds again, it's -27C outside now. Fingers crossed!
