We live in a bizzaro world.
Here in the West we have long enjoyed the hard fought benefits and freedoms of living in democracies. Now today we have people applauding and supporting extremist terrorist groups like Hamas with their genocidal ambitions to destroy Israel and murder all Jews contained within. We have people applauding and supporting extremist authoritarians like Putin and his expansionist ambitions to restore his beloved Soviet Union to it's former glory. And we have people applauding and supporting wannabe dictators like Trump who believes himself to be above the law and wants to destroy democracy in America. What happened? When did people stop caring about freedom and democracy? We live in a bizzaro world.
To the 30% who still support Trump,
... you are the dumbest people alive.

Those with differing world views than the majority of us are equally as free in our society to have those views. thankfully, they're the vast minority, and typically hold the least power as they are generally not wealthy or in a position of political power.steven lloyd wrote: ↑Jan 16th, 2024, 7:11 am Here in the West we have long enjoyed the hard fought benefits and freedoms of living in democracies. What happened is the MEDIA became slanted and they shamelessly flaunt their bias every second of the day.steven lloyd wrote: ↑Jan 16th, 2024, 7:11 am Here in the West we have long enjoyed the hard fought benefits and freedoms of living in democracies. How many sympathetic reports of Palestinians have we seen on Canadian news outlets? Answer: That's all we see during Canadian television coverage of this conflict.
How many sympathetic reports of Israel having been invaded by terrorists who murdered, kidnapped, drugged and raped them - terrorists who came from the Palestinian- and Hamas-occupied Gaza? Answer: None.
We share the same values as Israel yet we're led to be sympathetic toward Palestinians who hate our western values. Imagine if this had happened just after 9/11? How quickly we've forgotten. How much we've changed.
Bizzaro world, indeed.

Sadly the media felt forced to become slanted to catch our attention as news became the fodder of the masses on the internet and it was the only way to survive in our current economic system ... since we always want more for less or free they had to figure out how to survive ...Rejigger wrote: ↑Jan 16th, 2024, 9:19 am What happened is the MEDIA became slanted and they shamelessly flaunt their bias every second of the day.

Hamas are the terrorists, not the Palestinians ... and while I agree that Israel has the right to defend themselves against Hamas it's sadly the Palestinians who're the ones taking the most damage ...
We share similar values to Israel but I would hope that if we were in this type of situation we would practice a lot of restraint when the field of action contains so many non-combatants .... how many thousands of innocents have died to eradicate the few terrorists that can be confirmed killed now?
As we continue forward I am hoping that the death of democracy will not become the next unintended consequence ... I m hoping that things south of us straighten out and a sense of sanity will be regained

Re: We live in a bizzaro world.
Well, you lost credibility when you offered up your "opinion" of Trump. Yes, it is a bizzaro world we live in. Especially when people fail to research a subject thoroughly and form their opinion based solely on the bias of a person, or persons who themselves are bias and have not researched a subject thoroughly.steven lloyd wrote: ↑Jan 16th, 2024, 7:11 am Here in the West we have long enjoyed the hard fought benefits and freedoms of living in democracies. Super strange indeed!Jonrox wrote: ↑Jan 16th, 2024, 10:14 am It's strange indeed.
If a grocery store gets built in a neighborhood some folks believe it's perfectly logical to connect the dots that it's the first step towards a dystopian utopia under which the government has total control of our lives... down to the clothes we wear, the jobs we have, and will restrict our movement to within a few blocks of our homes.
And yet a candidate for US president says he'll be a dictator and these same folks can't connect the dots to this individual actually becoming a dictator.
Here in Kelowna, we have a government making laws to set a minimum the length of stay you have to rent out a suite in your principal residence or else it's deemed an illegal stay.
Here in Canada, we have a government claiming we have the "social capacity" to bring in more immigrants, yet we don't have the healthcare, houses or infrastructure to support their lives.
We have a government that uses "data" to ban handguns from law-abiding citizens with a great track record of not shooting people, and in the same pen stroke, reduces minimum sentencing for crimes committed with firearms. We didn't confiscate all the current owners' gun's either, so they weren't the issue according to the government, just the sale of guns, so it must be that criminals were buying guns with RPALs at firearm stores. If not, what did the freeze actually solve?
It's bizarro world for sure!

Re: We live in a bizzaro world.
Did I read correctly?
All we read is stories about support for Palestine.
Strange.
I read the National Post, and several other publications on a regular basis.
They are filled with Israel stories written by Jewish writers, 2 pages from the Jeruselum Post, ad infinitum.
The visual media is filled with images of the conflict filmed and edited by Israel, most lacking confirmation as to what is alleged.Natural I suppose, because 60 journalists have been killed, and or assassinated; large media, only report from Israel. On this site we still have almost forgotten and repeats about protests at U.S.universities, hardly reported in Canada and long forgotten by major news outlets in the U.S.
Note that last week, Israeli citizens are now blaming their soldiers, (IDF) for killing Israeli citizens with a tank gun who, living in a kibutz, despite being told their were Israelis living there.
(Only one small story about the tragedy in the Globe and Mail)
We do live in a bizzaro world..
I heard Donald Trump the other night praise Victor Orban of Hungary."What a nice man" Orban jails journalists and has friends buy up the media outlets.

I agree completely, although with the spread of disinformation and misinformation being used to divide us on social media I wonder if we are being naive in assuming this still only applies to an insignificant minority. I think this next election in the United States could very well prove otherwise. It is both ironic and troubling to see the deflections and excuses being used to justify and support the authoritarians and extremists that many people came to our countries to escape. It is a bizzaro world.youjustcomplain wrote: ↑Jan 16th, 2024, 8:00 am Those with differing world views than the majority of us are equally as free in our society to have those views.

I agree ! I believe that misinformation is a huge threat to our democracy. The fact that Donald Trump could be elected to power by the people he holds such contempt for is evidence that misinformation is alive and well.steven lloyd wrote: ↑Jan 16th, 2024, 1:04 pm I agree completely, although with the spread of disinformation and misinformation being used to divide us on social media I wonder if we are being naive in assuming this still only applies to an insignificant minority. Yes, it's Hamas, not the Palestinians. Hamas doesn't have any Palestinians amongst them; they don't recruit Palestinians. Why would the happy-go-lucky Palestinians want to join such a terrorist organization? Hamas terrorists live amongst Palestinians, but that doesn't mean they were being harbored by the Palestinians. The Palestinians had no idea Hamas was using hospitals to store their weapons caches, or that patients were used as human shields. Palestinians had no idea there were underground tunnels beneath their feet. These were all such well-kept secrets. How could Palestinians know any of this? I'm sure they're all just a bunch of useful idiots.spooker wrote: ↑Jan 16th, 2024, 9:52 am Hamas are the terrorists, not the Palestinians ... and while I agree that Israel has the right to defend themselves against Hamas it's sadly the Palestinians who're the ones taking the most damage ...

I wonder why Palestinians were forced out of Israel in the first place, what with them being such neighbourly, peace-loving people and all.

It's almost like people believe if we had a terrorist group in Canada that hid behind civilians, that the United States would somehow think twice before bombing the hell out of Canada. No, if the terrorists in Canada murdered 1,000+ Americans and then hid behind Canadian civilians, the civilians better move because the US is going to bomb the absolute hell out of them. If they didn't the US would be a bunch of weak sissies.
