There are actually people dumb enough to think that bankrupting landlords will inspire more landlords to rent housing out.The Green Barbarian wrote: ↑Apr 2nd, 2024, 4:33 pm Screenshot 2024-04-02 163245.png

I completely agree stopping allowing higher rent increases for people who have a baby- we have a very low birth rate, so many posters complain about our high immigration levels , but in the next breath don't want to make it a bit easier for Canadians to have families- so pick a lane
this also almost comes off as discrimination towards people who have Families who already have it hard enough to find an affordable rental -
but at least they are acknowledging that something needs to be done about helping Landlords to evict trouble Tenants, because that needs to happen- if a Tenant doesn't pay rent, out you go, no more challenging the dispute to prolong the squatting, also trouble Tenants who damage their property or threaten other Tenants should be evicted within 24 hrs-

Re: Rent communists!
I’ve never bumped up rent for having a baby or even two showed up in one place I rented to an immigrant couple which weren’t newborns but a couple years old, next thing you know gramma is living there and eventually I had no clue how many were in there. I can see lots of renters taking advantage of the new loophole by not disclosing the 16-19 year old “children” then just moving them in a week after signing a rental agreement along with all their crap. Fun times for property owners. I have an empty basement suite and it will stay that way.Patron wrote: ↑Apr 3rd, 2024, 7:24 amThe Green Barbarian wrote: ↑Apr 2nd, 2024, 4:33 pm Screenshot 2024-04-02 163245.png

I have been considering further development on my basement to accommodate a suite which would only need a shower installed and a small kitchen , however that’s off the table now . I’m out !

Re: Rent communists!
exactly. The bleeding heart fools applauding this madness have never rented before, and also, have no clue about the negative consequences of what they see as "good intentions". They never do, and they never admit their mistakes after the fact. Rental units are going to dry up now as this stupid war on landlords continues, and the housing crisis will be exacerbated, and of course it won't be the idiot government's fault, it never is, because they have "empathy" and those evil capitalist landlords don't. Such stupidity by the government here. It's just evil too in the end, because it will hurt way more people than it will help. As always.django wrote: ↑Apr 3rd, 2024, 8:41 amI’ve never bumped up rent for having a baby or even two showed up in one place I rented to an immigrant couple which weren’t newborns but a couple years old, next thing you know gramma is living there and eventually I had no clue how many were in there. I put a clause in our rental agreement that stated if an additional person moved in rent would increase by 50% as would the cost of electricity. And if a third person moved in it increased by a further 25%.django wrote: ↑Apr 3rd, 2024, 8:41 amI’ve never bumped up rent for having a baby or even two showed up in one place I rented to an immigrant couple which weren’t newborns but a couple years old, next thing you know gramma is living there and eventually I had no clue how many were in there. I wanted one renter in my basement suite, not a family and felt this was the only way to keep freeloaders out.

I wonder if that legislation would eventually include not being able to restrict the number of tenants period in your rental unit. Houses in BC that are on septic systems have restrictions on the number of bedrooms and people in the house based on the size of the septic tank and drain field. The Green Barbarian wrote: ↑Apr 2nd, 2024, 4:33 pm Screenshot 2024-04-02 163245.png

yes, that's what a LL can do, so do it - also never include utilities in your rental price, always keep them separateBabba_not_Gump wrote: ↑Apr 3rd, 2024, 10:43 amI put a clause in our rental agreement that stated if an additional person moved in rent would increase by 50% as would the cost of electricity. Very possible. Even if not intended, many renters will do just that. So, listing tenants/occupants in the lease becomes meaningless.Hurtlander wrote: ↑Apr 3rd, 2024, 11:07 am I wonder if that legislation would eventually include not being able to restrict the number of tenants period in your rental unit.

And, with that possibility hanging over their heads like the Sword of Damocles, more rental units simply vanish from the market.

And you are absolutely right, Cats. I for one am considering downsizing my business. With the amount of work, travel and expenses, and all for mediocre returns, adding more risks just doesn't cut it any longer.Catsumi wrote: ↑Apr 3rd, 2024, 7:00 pm^^^^^BC Landlord wrote: ↑Apr 3rd, 2024, 5:07 pm

Re: Rent communists!
So, it seems that we’ve gone full circle here
Renters screaming that there’s no place to rent that doesn’t cost an arm and leg
BC Govt thinks for a nanosecond and comes up with grand plan to finish off AirB+B’s, which will result in instant long term rentals. Wrong
In the meantime, the Fed Govt in its wisdom, allows a million with more to come, immigrants into the country to compete for housing.
Restrictions on Landlords and free passes granted to renters by both levels of govt, Landlord figures he can sell the rental and benefit more from investing in stock market.
The houses that go up for sale are bought by those who saved and of course, the new immigrants.
Now govt involves itself with building housing, at great cost to taxpayers and too few to make any difference
The Renters are screaming there’s no where to rent at any price
