‘Wokeness’ is linked to unhappiness, anxiety and depression, study finds

‘Wokeness’. It’s come to be one of the defining culture wars of our time. A concept that’s evolved so quickly, the word has almost got lost in its own hype and the frenzy of debate surrounding it. Its underlying meaning, however, has just been linked by one study to increased anxiety, depression and an overall lack of happiness. So, what does woke mean? The phrase originally comes from African-American Vernacular English, where it refers to being aware of discrimination and racial prejudice.

As it became more well used online, ‘woke’ expanded to include a wider interest in and understanding of societal injustices including sexism, racial injustice and the denial of LGBT rights. Soon, it became used as a catch-all term for all progressive political thinking and then something of an insult used by those that believe that social awareness isn’t exclusively a leftist idea. Then ‘anti-woke’ became a pejorative flung back at those people who are seen as conservative, right-wing or reactionary.

Putting the now-ever-so-slightly toxic word itself to the side for a moment, a new study suggests that – whether the person’s opinions are laudable or correct or not – attitudes towards social justice issues may very well be linked with heightened levels of anxiety and depression. Research from a Finnish academic suggests that stronger alignment with pro-social justice stances correlates quite markedly with increased instances of both anxiety and depression. These results recently went to print in the Scandinavian Journal of Psychology. Author of the research, Oskari Lahtinen, who is a senior researcher at the INVEST Research Flagship Centre at the University of Turku, started with a sample of 851 people, then scaled it up to 5,000 to get a more representative view.

The woke, like the political left are some of the most miserable people one could meet. Complete kiljoy's. They don't look for happiness, or good in life. They look for wrong in the world (in their minds), and if none exists then you can be sure they'll dream it up. Wokeness is a sickness!

Tennis legend calls out transgender athletes

This week, an Australian soccer tournament made headlines when five transgender women were permitted to play in a women’s tournament and ultimately led their team to victory and a substantial cash prize. And tennis legend Martina Navratilova is not at all happy about it.

According to a report from The Daily Mail Australia, five transgender women competed in the pre-season Beryl Ackroyd Cup women’s soccer tournament in Sydney, Australia, where they dominated the competition and won the championship.

“Flying Bats FC won every game they played over the course of the four-week competition, winning the grand final 4-0 at Macquarie Park on Sunday to take home the $1000 jackpot,” The Daily Mail Australia wrote this week.

“There were huge winning margins in some games, with one trans player scoring six goals in a 10-0 victory.”

When news of this spread on social media, Navratilova was quick to express her outrage.

“Been angry for years now- the unfairness is off the charts. I will say it again- keep women’s sports female. It is not the place for any (failed) male athletes,” Navratilova said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.

Navratilova has not been shy about criticizing transgender athletes on social media, and this is another example.

Amy Hamm: Wokeness hurts women. Why do so many support it?

A majority of Canadians reject “wokeness,” according to recent polls. But more than that, a new paper in the Scandinavian Journal of Psychology reveals something else — a male-female dichotomy. It is women who, for unclear reasons, disproportionately promulgate and buttress such progressive ideology. These findings are not surprising to anyone who has loudly opposed the politics of woke — myself included — and who has had largely female wrath visited upon them for their heresy.

Women should reject leftist radicalism. We suffer because of it. Instead, we promote it at work, in universities, in politics , our communities, and at home. We are the primary drivers of woke hogwash. This admission is both humiliating and enraging — but it’s true. Canadian institutions are beholden to this mostly female minority that not only bores us to tears — care to hear another personalized land acknowledgement, anyone? — but terrorizes us at the mere scent of wavering fealty.

“Wokeness” has been described as everything from a political epithet for a bogeyman of the extreme left to a catch-all for any cause whatsoever that concerns itself with the well-being of an identifiable group. A more reasonable definition, borrowed from political scientist Yascha Mounk, is that wokeness is a version of social justice based on what he terms “the identity synthesis.” It views human beings not as individuals, but as a collection of group identities that are either oppressed, or oppressive. And to be oppressed is to be virtuous; to be a victim is to hold precious social cachet. The more oppressed one is, the better a person they are — and the more we should all be forced to cater to their every whimsical desire. It goes without saying that wokeness is a race to the bottom of human dignity, potential and uniqueness.

Further to this excellent article above, I was on LinkedIn today and saw this:

Real "gender diversity" going on there at University of Calgary when it comes to implementing "diversity and inclusion". Just as Amy Hamm is talking about, looking who is primarily pushing this woke DEI crap - a majority of the adherents are women - and who is suffering the most from this DEI crap? As Amy says (not me), it's women like herself. Why are women choosing to follow radical stupid agendas that end up hurting themselves? What's with this cultural suicide??

So, someone told this guy to "Go F himself" and he wondered..."Can I get the government to fund this?"

If he wants to pay for this, float your boat, but this isn't something that should ever bump far more important surgeries.

Amy Hamm: J.K. Rowling neutered Scotland's hate speech law using only her words

Scotland’s new law did not pass in a vacuum: it is but one example of similar legislation that is being pushed across the West, including in Britain, Ireland, and Canada. In the U.S., attempts at such laws have been thwarted by America’s First Amendment. Sadly, us common law citizens have no such equivalent protection. Instead, we are left hoping that sports stars or benevolent billionaires like JK Rowling will not only push back, but in doing so will also remind us all that our freedoms are precious and must be vigilantly protected. We need troublemakers like her to flout draconian legislation.

And flout she did: Rowling posted a provocative thread with examples of Scottish transwomen who’ve done heinous things — threatened violence against women; been convicted of rape (including of minors), indecent exposure, or possession of child pornography — and then ended up in women’s prisons; bragged about stealing and wearing their sister’s underwear; and replaced women in sports or professional roles, including as head of one Scottish rape crisis centre. Rowling even made jokes along the way — such audacity — concluding with a taunt for Scottish police to arrest her: “I’m currently out of the country, but if what I’ve written here qualifies as an offence under the terms of the new act, I look forward to being arrested when I return to the birthplace of the Scottish Enlightenment.”

More than 3,000 complaints were lodged with Scottish police the first day the new law came into effect. India Willoughby , one of the transwomen called out in Rowling’s thread, was quick to cry “ hate crime .” Police — arrest that witch!

Alas, Rowling continues to speak, and not from the inside of a prison cell. Scottish police released a statement on April 2 that, despite numerous public complaints about her words, no action would be taken . And just like that, Rowling gelded her country’s Hate Crime and Public Order Act. Her powerful spell apparently affected U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak as well , leading him to profess that no one should be criminalized for stating biological facts.

NPR whistleblower Uri Berliner claims colleagues ‘confidentially’ agree with him about broadcaster’s hard-left bias

The veteran National Public Radio journalist who blew the whistle on the broadcaster’s overt liberal bias said that he has heard from colleagues who secretly agree with him but can’t go public with their criticisms.

Uri Berliner, an award-winning business editor and reporter during his 25-year career at NPR, said his essay in Bari Weiss’ online news site The Free Press generated “a lot of support from colleagues, and many of them unexpected, who say they agree with me.”

“Some of them say this confidentially,” Berliner told NewsNation anchor Chris Cuomo on Tuesday.

Berliner said that he wrote the essay partly because “we’ve been too reluctant, too frightened to, too timid to deal with these things.”
