Interesting. Maybe I did something wrong when transplanting carrots….maybe cut their rootlets too far back?

Lettuce is loving this weather!

Except for my romaine - I started some from seed something like 2 weeks ago, and I'm only now seeing green in the area, I'll have to wait to see if it is weed or lettuce. If it turns out to be weeds, I will buy romaine starts :/

I planted far too many Romaine seeds….they were ancient, been stored away in freezer for 8 [?] years so. Thinking they were kaput, I planted what was left in the pkg…. Turned out to be plenty of seed unlike what we get today.

Anyway, they all grew and I gave away probably 100 or more and still have plenty left. Is it possible you planted the seeds too deep or have quail dug out young, still below the ground, tidbits?

Did you release your quail down at my place while I wasn't looking? Because I saw one today traversing the top of the wood fence. I may require that recipe.

Might you not use your nylon curtains as a light cover to protect your plants until they are sturdy enough to survive pecking?

We need little mesh caps/covers to put over new seedlings, 2 or 3 inches high, enough to keep insects and birds from eating them and allow sunlight in.

I have my heavy duty-cages out - they're too tall. I am going to do a bit of researching to see what I can do - maybe grab some dollar-store bird netting or something.

Went to garden first time in a week since we had so much rain, why bother? Well, it was dry as a popcorn phart with a few hollows made by quail, directly over my new bean sproutlings. The ones left above ground are pecked.

I knew better. Thought soil would be wet enough to discourage them.

My tomatoes are lagging. Both my mom and mom-in-law are raving about "sea soil". Think I'll try some.

For those who've forgotten or never knew, you can have green onions for months on end just by planting one that you bought.

Pick one that has good roots, cut the top off and stick it in the ground. It will grow.
Throughout the summer and into the fall, just trim off the green part as you need it. We grew some in our garden that were 3 ft tall and still producing.

Here's one I planted today in a planter, having forgotten all about this little trick. It has chives growing next to it.

My Japanese pal told me about this neat trick and I diligently posted it 4 years ago. Glad to see it’s catching on. I also plant seeds and by the time they are ready to give up their leaves to your cooking, those older, store bought green onions are flagging. Don’t pull them up unless you want the bulbs for soups.

Look out for the flat leaf green onions that come from Mexico, they’ll grow alright, but the leaf is tough as tires. Pick instead the round leaf variety, more tender, and yes, leave them in ground through winter. Come Spring, there they are waiting to be snipped into an omelette

Snagged some of that "sea soil" and have dug it in around some plants, top dressed a few others.
